Glacial responses to climate change exhibit considerable heterogeneity. Although global glaciers are generally thinning and retreat, glaciers in the Karakoram region are distinct in their surging or advancing, exhibiting nearly zero or positive mass balance-a phenomenon known as the Karakoram Anomaly. This anomaly has sparked significant scientific interest, prompting extensive research into glacier anomalies. However, the dynamics of the Karakoram anomaly, particularly its evolution and persistence, remain insufficiently explored. In this study, we employed Landsat reflectance data and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) MCD43A3 albedo products to developed high-resolution albedo retrieval models using two machine learning (ML) regressions--random forest regression (RFR) and back-propagation neural network regression (BPNNR). The optimal BPNNR model (Pearson correlation coefficient [r] = 0.77-0.97, unbiased root mean squared error [ubRMSE] = 0.056-0.077, RMSE = 0.055-0.168, Bias = -0.149 similar to -0.001) was implemented on the Google Earth Engine cloud-based platform to estimate summer albedo at a 30-m resolution for the Karakoram region from 1990 to 2021. Validation against in-situ albedo measurements on three glaciers (Batura, Mulungutti and Yala Glacier) demonstrated that the model achieved an average ubRMSE of 0.069 (p < 0.001), with RMSE and ubRMSE improvements of 0.027 compared to MODIS albedo products. The high-resolution data was then used to identify firn/snow extents using a 0.37 threshold, facilitating the extraction of long-term firn-line altitudes (FLA) to indicate the glacier dynamics. Our findings revealed that a consistent decline in summer albedo across the Karakoram over the past three decades, signifying a darkening of glacier surfaces that increased solar radiation absorption and intensified melting. The reduction in albedo showed spatial heterogeneity, with slower reductions in the western and central Karakoram (-0.0005-0.0005 yr(-1)) compared to the eastern Karakoram (-0.006 similar to -0.01 yr(-1)). Notably, surge- or advance-type glaciers, avalanche-fed glaciers and debris-covered glaciers exhibited slower albedo reduction rates, which decreased further with increasing glacier size. Additionally, albedo reduction accelerated with altitude, peaking near the equilibrium-line altitude. Fluctuations in the albedo-derived FLAs suggest a transition in the dynamics of Karakoram glaciers from anomalous behavior to retreat. Most glaciers exhibited anomalous behavior from 1995 to 2010, peaking in 2003, but they have shown signs of retreat since the 2010s, marking the end of the Karakoram anomaly. These insights deepen our understanding of the Karakoram anomaly and provide a theoretical basis for assessing the effect of glacier anomaly to retreat dynamics on the water resources and adaptation strategies for the Indus and Tarim Rivers.

Identifying the changes in terrestrial water storage is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the regional hydrological mass balance under global climate change. This study used a partial least square regression model to fill the observation gaps between GRACE and GRACE-FO and obtained a complete series of terrestrial water storage anomaly data from April 2002 to December 2020 from southeast China. We investigated the variations in terrestrial water storage anomalies in the region and the influencing factors. The study revealed that terrestrial water storage (TWS) anomalies have been increasing in the region, with an average increase of 0.33 cm/yr (p < 0.01). The intra-annual variation showed a positive anomaly from March to September and a negative anomaly in other months. Terrestrial water storage anomalies increased in most regions (especially in the central and northern parts), whereas they decreased in the southern parts. In terms of the components, the soil moisture storage (SMS) contributes 58.3 % and the surface water storage (SWS, especially reservoirs water storage) contributes 41.4 % to the TWS. The study also found that changes in the precipitation explain approximately 71.7 % of the terrestrial water storage variation, and reservoirs contributes to the remaining 28.3 %. These results are essential for understanding the changes in the hydrological cycle and developing strategies for water management in Southeast China.

Nitrate (NO3-) is a prominent atmospheric pollutant and a key chemical constituent of snow and ice, which plays a crucial role in the atmosphere and significantly impacts regional climate and environment conditions through a series of complex chemical processes. By summarizing the recent research progress on the nitrate chemical process (particularly on the isotopic measurements of NO3- (delta 15N, Delta 17O and delta 18O)) in atmosphere and glacier snow, this study mainly investigated the chemical compositions and chemical processes, formation pathways, and photochemical reactions of nitrate in snow and atmosphere. Our results identified that the main ways of atmospheric nitrate formation are the hydrolysis of N2O5 and the reaction of center dot OH with NO2; the spatial distribution of Delta 17O and delta 18O values of atmospheric nitrate have a significant latitudinal trend between 30 degrees N-60 degrees N; the study of stable isotopes (delta 15N and delta 18O) and the oxygen isotope anomaly (Delta 17O) of nitrate have mainly been carried out over the densely populated and coastal mega cities; there exist significant gaps in the study of chemistry processes of nitrate in snow and ice and the air-snow interfaces across glaciated regions. This study provides a basic reference for more robust observations and research of nitrate in glacier areas in the future.

We introduce a Rainfall, Snow and Glacier melt (RSG) standardized anomaly (SA) index to reflect water availability in cold river basins by taking into account snow and glacier melt that influence seasonal water availability. The study takes advantage of a high-resolution Water and Energy Budget-Based Hydrological Distributed Model with improved snow physics (WEB-DHM-S) at a grid size of 5 km to quantify hydrological regimes in a typical cold river basin in the Tibetan Plateau (Lhasa River basin as a demonstration site) from 1983 to 2012. Standardized anomaly index was utilized as drought Indicator whereby each meteo-hydrological parameter involved in drought quantification was fitted to a distribution pattern on a monthly basis. Akaike Information Criterion and Bayesian Information Criterion were used as selection criteria. Drought indices were computed from the model inputs and outputs, which included RSG for meteorological drought, soil moisture (surface and root-zone) for agricultural drought and discharge and groundwater level for hydrological drought. From spatial and temporal analyses, drought occurred in 1984, 1988, 1995, 1997, 2009 and 2010, with the highest severity in August, September, July, August, June and June, respectively. This study addresses the glacierized cold river basin's dryness by considering the contribution of snow and glacier in drought quantification, an integration of meteorological, agricultural and hydrological was performed to highlight drought hotspots in the Lhasa River Basin. The accelerated warming of the Arctic climate may alter the local and regional surface energy balances, for which changing land surface temperatures (LSTs) are a key indicator. Modeling current and anticipated changes in the surface energy balance tequires an understanding of the spatio-temporal interactions between LSTs and land cover, both of which can be monitored globally by measurements from space. This paper investigates the accuracy of the MODIS LST/Emissivity Daily L3 Global 1 km V005 product and its spatio-temporal sensitivity to land surface properties in a Canadian High Arctic permafrost landscape. The land cover ranged from fully vegetated wet sedge tundra to barren rock. MODIS LSTs were compared with in situ radiometer measurements from wet tundra areas collected over a 2-year period from July 2008 to July 2010 including both summer and winter conditions. The accuracy of the MODIS LSTs was -1.1 degrees C with a root mean square error of 3.9 degrees C over the entire observation period. Agreement was lowest during the freeze-back periods where MODIS 1ST showed a cold bias likely due to the overrepresentation of clear-sky conditions. A multi-year analysis of LST spatial anomalies, i.e., the difference between MODIS LSTs and the MODIS 1ST regional mean, revealed a robust spatiotemporal pattern. Highest variability in LST anomalies was found during freeze-up and thaw periods as well as for open water surface in early summer due to the presence or absence of snow or ice. The summer anomaly pattern was similar for all three years despite strong differences in precipitation, air temperature and net radiation. Summer periods with regional mean ISTs above 5.0 degrees C showed the greatest spatial diversity with four distinct 2.0 degrees C classes. Summer anomalies ranged from -4.5 degrees C to 2.6 degrees C with an average standard deviation of 1.8 degrees C. Dry ridge areas heated up the most, while wetland areas and dry areas of sparsely vegetated bedrock with a high albedo remained coolest. The observed summer LST anomalies can be used as a baseline against which to evaluate both past and future changes in land surface properties that relate to the surface energy balance. Summer anomaly classes mainly reflected a combination of albedo and surface wetness. The potential to use this tool to monitor surface drying and wetting in the Arctic should therefore be further explored. A multi-sensor approach combining thermal satellite measurements with optical and radar imagery promises to be an effective tool for a dynamic, process-based ecosystem monitoring scheme.
