The existence of rock weathering products has an important effect on the infiltration of water in the soil. Understanding the mechanism of water infiltration in a mixed soil and weathered rock debris medium is highly important for soil science and hydrology. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of mudstone hydrolysis on water infiltration in the soil under different mixing ratios (0-70 %) of weathered mudstone contents. Soil column experiments and numerical modelling were used to study the processes of hydrolysis of weathered mudstone and water infiltration in the mixed medium. The results revealed that water immersion can cause the dense mudstone surface to fall off, thus forming pores, and that the amount of these pores first increase but then decrease over time. The disintegration of post-hydrolysis mudstone debris occurs mainly among particles ranging from 2-2000 mu m, predominantly transforming sand particles into finer fractions. Increasing the mudstone content in the soil from 0 % to 50 % enhances the infiltration rate and cumulative infiltration volume. However, when the mudstone content exceeds 50 %, these parameters decrease. The mudstone weathering products promote water infiltration in the soil within a certain range of mudstone contents, but as the ratio of weathered products increases, excessive amounts of mudstone hinder the movement of water in the soil. The identified transformation phenomenon suggests that the infiltration capacity of mixed soil will not scale linearly with mudstone content. The findings enable some mitigation strategies of geologic hazards based on the hydrological stability in heterogeneous environments.
A realistic prediction of excess pore water pressure generation and the onset of liquefaction during earthquakes are crucial when performing effective seismic site response analysis. In the present research, the validation of two pore water pressure (PWP) models, namely energy-based GMP and strain-based VD models implemented in a one-dimensional site response analysis code, was conducted by comparing numerical predictions with highquality seismic centrifuge test measurements. A careful discussion on the selection of input soil parameters for numerical simulations was made with particular emphasis on the PWP model parameter calibration which was based on undrained stress-controlled/strain-controlled cyclic simple shear (CSS) tests carried out on the same sand used in the centrifuge test. The results of the study reveal that the energy-based model predicts at all depths peak pore water pressures and dissipation behaviour in a satisfactory way with respect to experimental measurements, whereas the strain-based model underestimates the PWP measurements at low depths. Further comparisons of the acceleration response spectra illustrate that both the strain- and energy-based models provide higher computed spectral accelerations near the ground surface compared with the recorded ones, whereas the agreement is reasonable at middle depth.
Shallow cut-and-cover underground structures, such as subway stations, are traditionally designed as rigid boxes (moment-resisting connections between the main structural members), seeking internal hyperstaticity and high lateral (transverse) stiffness to achieve important seismic capacity. However, since seismic ground motions impose racking drifts, this proved rather prejudicial, with great structural damage and little resilience. Therefore, two previous papers proposed an opposite strategy seeking low lateral (transverse) stiffness by connecting the structural elements flexibly (hinging and sliding). Under severe seismic inputs, these structures would accommodate racking without significant damage; this behaviour is highly resilient. The seismic resilience of this solution was numerically demonstrated in the well-known Daikai station (Kobe, Japan) and a station located in Chengdu (China). This paper is a continuation of these studies; it aims to extend, deepen, and ground this conclusion by performing a numerical parametric study on these two stations in a wide and representative set of situations characterised by the soil type, overburden depth, engineering bedrock position, and high- and lowlateral-stiffness of the stations. The performance indices are the racking displacement and the structural damage (quantified through concrete damage variables). The findings of this study validate the previous remarks and provide new insights.
The effective dynamic viscosity of a soil-rock mixture (S-RM) serves as a essential parameter for simulating flowlike landslides in the context of fluid kinematics. Accurate measurement of this viscosity is significant for understanding the remote sustainability and rheological properties of landslide hazards. This study presents a method for determining dynamic viscosity, incorporating experimental measurements and numerical inversion. The experiment involves monitoring the movement of S-RMs with varying water content and rock block concentration, followed by the calculation of centroid displacements and velocities using digital image processing. The power-law model, combined with computational fluid dynamics, effectively captures the flow-like behavior of the S-RM. A grid search method is then employed to determine the optimal parameters by comparing the predicted centroid displacement with experimental results. A series of flume experiments were conducted, resulting in the observation of spatial mass distribution and centroid displacement variations over time during soil-rock movement. The dynamic viscosity model of the S-RM is derived from the experimental data. This dynamic viscosity model was then employed to simulate an additional flume experiment, with the results demonstrating excellent agreement between the simulated and experimental centroid displacements. Sensitivity analysis of the dynamic viscosity model indicates a dependence on shear rate and demonstrates a high sensitivity to water content and rock block concentration, following a parabolic trend within the measured range. This research contributes to the fields of geotechnical engineering and landslide risk assessment, offering a practical and effective method of measuring the dynamic viscosity of S-RM. Future research could explore additional factors influencing rheological behavior and extend the applicability of the proposed method to different geological environments.
The thermo-mechanical (TM) behaviour of the energy pile (EP) group becomes more complicated in the presence of seepage, and the mechanism by which seepage impacts the EP group remains unclear.In the current work, a 2 x 2 scale model test bench of EP group was set up to investigate the TM behaviour of EP group with seepage. The test results indicate that the heat exchange performance of EP group with seepage can be significantly enhanced, but also leads to obvious differences in the temperature distribution of pile and surrounding soil along the seepage direction, and thus causes evident differences in the mechanical properties between the front pile and the back pile in pile group. Compared with the parallel connection form, the thermal performance of EP group with the series connection form is slightly attenuated. However, the mechanical properties of various piles in the EP group differ significantly. Under the action of seepage, the mechanical balance properties of various piles in the forward series form are optimal, followed by the parallel form, and the reverse series form is the least optimal. A 3-D CFD model was established to further obtain the influence of seepage and arrangement forms on EP group. The findings indicate that seepage can not only mitigate thermal interference between distinct piles but also expedite the process of heat transfer from pile-soil to reach a state of stability. Concurrently, the thermal migration effect induced by seepage will be superimposed along the seepage direction, resulting in the elevation of thermal interference of each pile along the seepage direction, and the superposition of thermal migration effect increases with the time. Under the same seepage condition, the cross arrangement can enhance the thermal performance of EP group, optimize the temperature distribution of pile and soil, and thus the imbalance of mechanical properties among pile groups can be reduced. In addition, the concepts of thermal interference coefficient and heat exchange rate per unit soil volume are introduced to facilitate a more precise evaluation of the thermal interference degree of each pile in the pile group and the heat exchange performance under different pile arrangement forms.The standard deviation and mean value in the statistical method are used to evaluate the equilibrium of mechanical properties of pile group, which is more intuitive to compare the differences in mechanical properties of pile groups under different working conditions.
Soil-plant-atmosphere interaction (SPAI) plays a significant role on the safety and serviceably of geotechnical infrastructure. The mechanical and hydraulic soil behaviour varies with the soil water content and pore water pressures (PWP), which are in turn affected by vegetation and weather conditions. Focusing on the hydraulic reinforcement that extraction of water through the plant roots offers, this study couples advances in ecohydrological modelling with advances in geotechnical modelling, overcoming previous crude assumptions around the application of climatic effects on the geotechnical analysis. A methodology for incorporating realistic ecohydrological effects in the geotechnical analysis is developed and validated, and applied in the case study of a cut slope in Newbury, UK, for which field monitoring data is available, to demonstrate its successful applicability in boundary value problems. The results demonstrate the positive effect of vegetation on the infrastructure by increasing the Factor of Safety. Finally, the effect of climate change and changes in slope vegetation cover are investigated. The analysis results demonstrate that slope behaviour depends on complex interactions between the climate and the soil hydraulic properties and cannot be solely anticipated based on climate data, but suctions and changes in suction need necessarily to be considered.
A novel framework for nonlinear thermal elastic-viscoplastic (TEVP) constitutive relationships was proposed in this study, incorporating three distinct thermoplasticity mechanisms. These four TEVP formulations, combined with an existing TEVP constitutive equation presented in the companion paper, were integrated into a coupled consolidation and heat transfer (CHT) numerical model. The CHT model accounts for large strain, soil selfweight, creep strains, thermal-induced strains, the relative velocity of fluid and solid phases, varying hydraulic conductivity and compressibility during consolidation process, time-dependent loading, and heat transfer, including thermal conduction, thermo-mechanical dispersion, and advection. The performance of CHT model, incorporating different TEVP constitutive equations, was evaluated through comparing the simulation results with measurements from laboratory oedometer tests. Simulation results, including settlement, excess pore pressure and temperature profiles, showed good agreement with the experimental data. All four TEVP constitutive relationships produced identical results for the consolidation behavior of soil that in the oedometer tests. The TEVP constitutive equations may not have a significant effect on the heat transfer in soil layers because of the identical performance on simulating soil compression. The CHT model, incorporating the four TEVP constitutive equations, was then used to investigate the long-term consolidation and heat transfer behavior of a four layer soil stratum under seasonally cyclic thermal loading in a field test, with excellent agreement observed between simulated results and measured data.
The cracking during the drying process of thickened tailings stack is a critical issue impacting its stability. This study establishes a comprehensive analytical framework that encompasses both mechanism cognition and technical methodologies by systematically integrating multidimensional research findings. Research indicates that cracking results from the coupling effects of environmental parameters and process conditions. The environmental chamber, with its precise control over external conditions, has emerged as essential experimental equipment for simulating actual working environments. From a mechanical perspective, water evaporation induces volume shrinkage, leading to microcrack formation when local tensile stress surpasses the matrix's tensile strength, ultimately resulting in a network of interconnected cracks. This process is governed by the dual parameters of matric suction and tensile strength. In terms of theoretical modeling, the fracture mechanics model analyzes crack propagation laws from an energy dissipation standpoint, while the stress path analysis model emphasizes the consolidation shrinkage coupling effect. The tensile damage model is particularly advantageous for engineering practice due to its parameter measurability. In numerical simulation technology, the finite element method is constrained by the predetermined crack path, whereas the discrete element method can dynamically reconstruct the crack evolution process but encounters the technical challenge of large-scale multi-field coupling calculations. Research suggests that future efforts should focus on optimizing theoretical prediction models that account for the characteristics and cracking behavior of tailings materials. Additionally, it is essential to develop a comprehensive equipment system that integrates real-time monitoring, intelligent regulation, and data analysis. This paper innovatively proposes the establishment of a multi-scale collaborative research paradigm that integrates indoor testing, numerical simulation, and on-site monitoring. By employing data fusion technology, it aims to enhance the accuracy of crack predictions and provide both theoretical support and technical guarantees for the safety prevention and control of thickened tailings stacks throughout their entire life cycle.
In recent years, there has been an increased focus on the research of earthen construction, driven by the rising demand for low-cost and sustainable building materials. Numerous studies have investigated the properties of compressed earth blocks (CEBs), however, very few have examined the properties of earth-based mortar. Mortar is an essential component and further investigation is required to enhance the mechanical performance of CEB structures. The study focuses on raw earth mortar (REM), which is a rudimentary mix of water with natural earth consisting of sand, silt and clay. Through experimental investigation, the fresh and hardened properties of three REM mixes were examined to determine the influence of cement stabilisation and jute fibre reinforcement. Shear triplet CEB assemblages were manufactured and tested to determine the initial shear strength of each mortar mix. The addition of 20 mm jute fibre at 0.25 % by weight increased the compressive and flexural strength of cement-stabilised raw earth mortar by 12 % and 20 % respectively. The addition of jute fibre also enhanced the initial shear strength, angle of internal friction and coefficient of friction during shear triplet testing. Finite element analysis (FEA) was undertaken to model the failure mechanism of the CEB assemblages, employing the use of cohesive zone modelling. The results of the FEA provided a satisfactory correspondence to the behaviour observed during experimental analysis and were within +/- 5.0 % of the expected values. The outcome of this investigation demonstrates the potential of REM and contributes to the development of low-cost and sustainable earth construction.
The coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical response caused by fire temperature transfer to surrounding rock/soil has a significant impact on tunnel safety. This study developed a numerical simulation model to evaluate the effects of fire on tunnel structures across different geological conditions. The heat transfer behavior varied with the mechanical properties and permeability of the geotechnics, concentrating within 1.0 m outside the tunnel lining and lasted for 10 days. Significant differences in pore water pressure changes were observed, with less permeable geologies experiencing greater pressure increases. Tunnel deformation was more pronounced in weaker geotechnics, though some tunnels in stronger geologies showed partial recovery post-fire. During the fire, thermal expansion created a bending moment, while a negative bending moment occurred after the fire due to tunnel damage and geotechnical coupling. The entire process led to irreversible changes in the bending moment. The depth of tunnel burial showed varying sensitivity to fire across different geological settings. This study provides important references for fire protection design and post-fire rehabilitation of tunnels under diverse geological conditions.
