Ongoing and amplified climate change in the Arctic is leading to glacier retreat and to the exposure of an ever-larger portion of non-glaciated permafrost-dominated landscapes. Warming will also cause more precipitation to fall as rain, further enhancing the thaw of previously frozen ground. Yet, the impact of those perturbations on the geochemistry of Arctic rivers remains a subject of debate. Here, we determined the geochemical composition of waters from various contrasting non-glacial permafrost catchments and investigated their impact on a glacially dominated river, the Zackenberg River (Northeast Greenland), during late summer (August 2019). We also studied the effect of rainfall on the geochemistry of the Zackenberg River, its non-glacial tributaries, and a nearby independent non-glacial headwater stream Gr ae nse. We analyzed water properties, quantified and characterized dissolved organic matter (DOM) using absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy and radiocarbon isotopes, and set this alongside analyses of the major cations (Ca, Mg, Na, and K), dissolved silicon (Si), and germanium/silicon ratios (Ge/Si). The glacier-fed Zackenberg River contained low concentrations of major cations, dissolved Si and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and a Ge/Si ratio typical of bulk rock. Glacial DOM was enriched in protein-like fluorescent DOM and displayed relatively depleted radiocarbon values (i.e., old DOM). Non-glacial streams (i.e., tributaries and Gr ae nse) had higher concentrations of major cations and DOC and DOM enriched in aromatic compounds. They showed a wide range of values for radiocarbon, Si and Ge/Si ratios associated with variable contributions of surface runoff relative to deep active layer leaching. Before the rain event, Zackenberg tributaries did not contribute notably to the solute export of the Zackenberg River, and supra-permafrost ground waters governed the supply of solutes in Zackenberg tributaries and Gr ae nse stream. After the rain event, surface runoff modified the composition of Gr ae nse stream, and non-glacial tributaries strongly increased their contribution to the Zackenberg River solute export. Our results show that summer rainfall events provide an additional source of DOM and Si-rich waters from permafrost-underlain catchments to the discharge of glacially dominated rivers. This suggests that the magnitude and composition of solute exports from Arctic rivers are modulated by permafrost thaw and summer rain events. This event-driven solute supply will likely impact the carbon cycle in rivers, estuaries, and oceans and should be included into future predictions of carbon balance in these vulnerable Arctic systems.

As an important type of light-absorbing aerosol, brown carbon (BrC) has the potential to affect the atmospheric photochemistry and Earth's energy budget. A comprehensive field campaign was carried out along the transport pathway of Asian dust during the spring of 2016, including a desert site (Erenhot), a rural site (Zhangbei), and an urban site (Jinan), in northern China. Optical properties, bulk chemical compositions, and potential sources of water-soluble brown carbon (WS-BrC) were investigated in atmospheric total suspended particulate (TSP) samples. Samples from Zhangbei had higher mass absorption efficiency at 365 nm (MAE(365), 132 +/- 0.34 m(2) g(-1)) than those from Jinan (1.00 +/- 023 m(2) g(-1)) and Erenhot (0.84 +/- 0.30 m(2) g(-1)). Compere to the non-dust samples, elevated water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) concentrations and MAE 365 values of dust samples from Erenhot are related to the input of high molecular weight organic compounds and biogenic matter from the Gobi Desert, while lower values from Zhangbei and Jinan are attributed to the dilution effect caused by strong northwesterly winds. Based on fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectra and parallel factor analysis, two humic-like (C1 and C2) and two protein-like (C3 and C4) substances were identified. Together, C1 and C2 accounted for similar to 64% of total fluorescence intensity at the highly polluted urban Jinan site; C3 represented similar to 45% at the rural Zhangbei site where local biomass burning affects; and C4 contributed similar to 24% in the desert region (Erenhot) due to dust-sourced biogenic substances. The relative absorptive forcing of WS-BrC compared to black carbon at 300-400 nm was about 31.3%, 13.9%, and 9.2% during non-dust periods at Erenhot, Zhangbei, and Jinan, respectively, highlighting that WS-BrC may significantly affect the radiative balance of Earth's climate system and should be included in radiative forcing models. Arctic landscapes are experiencing intense warming and modification of precipitation regimes with climate change. Permafrost disturbances and climate change impacts on hydrology of Arctic watersheds are likely to modify the quantity and composition of exported dissolved organic matter (DOM). In July 2007, intense rainfall and active layer thickening caused widespread active layer detachments at Cape Bounty, Melville Island (Canada). This study investigates the impacts of seasonal hydrology and permafrost disturbance on DOM composition exported from High Arctic headwater catchments. In 2012, streams were sampled from three disturbed catchments and one undisturbed catchment. The composition of DOM was characterized using absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy. DOM was mostly exported during the spring freshet. Throughout this period, the undisturbed catchment exported humifiedDOMwith high humic-like fluorescence that likely originated from runoff through shallow organic rich soil. In contrast, DOM exported from disturbed catchments was fresher, less humified with a high proportion of low molecular weight humic acid. We demonstrate that disturbed catchments delivered likely more labile DOM derived from either thawed permafrost or enhanced microbial activity. If this labile DOM comes from an ancient pool, as indicated by other studies at this site, disturbances may strengthen the permafrost carbon feedback on climate change.
