This study presents a hierarchical multiscale approach that combines the finite-element method (FEM) and the discrete-element method (DEM) to investigate tunneling-induced ground responses in coarse-grained soils. The approach considers both particle-scale physical characteristics and engineering-scale boundary value problems (BVPs) simultaneously, accurately reproducing typical tunneling-induced mechanical responses in coarsegrained soils, including soil arching and ground movement characteristics observed in laboratory tests and engineering practice. The study also unveils particle-scale mechanisms responsible for the evolution of soil arching through the underlying DEM-based RVEs. The results show that the rearrangement of microstructures and the deflection of strong contact force chains drive the rotation of macroscopic principal stress and the formation of soil arch. The microscopic fabric anisotropy direction can serve as a quantitative indicator for characterizing soil arching zones. Moreover, the effects of particle size distributions (PSD) and soil densities on ground deformation patterns are interpreted based on the stress-strain responses and contact network characteristics of DEM RVEs. These multiscale insights enrich the knowledge of tunneling-induced ground responses and the same approach can be applied to other geotechnical engineering analyses in coarse-grained soils.
A series of large-scale (1:13) model tests of multi-stage loading and unidirectional multi-cycle loading were conducted on semi-rigid piles before and after cement-soil reinforcement in clay. The difference of ultimate bearing capacity between unreinforced and reinforced piles under different criterions is discussed, and their bending moment and displacement distribution rules are revealed. Meanwhile, the cyclic bearing behaviour of the unreinforced and reinforced piles are compared and analyzed, including cyclic load-displacement response, unloading stiffness, cumulative peak & residual displacement, peak & locked in moment. The test results show that the ultimate bearing capacity of the large diameter pile is increased by 34.4 % and the initial stiffness is increased by 56.8 % (reinforced width is 3D and depth is 1D) in the multistage loading test. Comparing the monotonic and cyclic load-displacement curves of unreinforced and reinforced piles obtained by multi-stage loading test and unidirectional multi-cycle loading test respectively, it is found that when the applied load is small, the curve obtained from multistage loading test is almost coincident with the first cycle envelope of all load levels in 1-way multi-cycle loading test, indicating that the cyclic effect is not significant. As the load increases, the difference between the curves becomes larger, indicating that the cyclic loading of higher amplitude causes greater soil disturbance. In addition, after applying cement-soil to the shallow soil around monopile, cement-soil reinforced pile exhibits a more rigid response, specifically manifested as an initial unloading stiffness of 1.76 times that of unreinforced pile, and a slower stiffness degradation rate. Meanwhile, the cyclic peak displacement & residual displacement accumulation of reinforced piles are smaller than that of the unreinforced pile, thereby reducing the development of the locked in moment.
Bridges are important social infrastructure, and in particular, the stability of the back-fill behind the abutment determines the safety of the entire bridge. Recent climate change has increased the risk of flooding, and damage caused by back-fill erosion and collapse is increasing. The objective of this study is to elucidate the damage mechanism of the back-fill of bridge abutments during floods and to propose new reinforcement techniques. In the experiments, indoor open channel tests using a scaled model were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the Gabion Faced Reinforced Soil Wall (GRW), which is a reinforcement method integrating gabions and geosynthetics to reduce the collapse of the back-fill due to flooding. The result of the study showed that the GRW was effective in preventing the collapse of the back-fill due to flooding. As a result, the time until complete collapse of the back-fill was three times longer in the case where GRW was installed than in the case where no countermeasures were taken. This suggests that GRW may be effective during flood events. However, boiling due to changes in pore water pressure occurred inside the back-fill, resulting in progressive sediment discharge. In particular, the effect of the gabion installation geometry was observed, confirming that the corner design is important to control scour. This study experimentally verified the effectiveness of the reinforced soil wall and provided knowledge that contributes to improving the durability of abutment back-fill during flooding. In the future, quantitative evaluation will be conducted to establish a more practical design method.
Frozen mixed soils are widely distributed in the strata and slopes of permafrost regions. This paper aims to study the strength criterion and elastoplastic constitutive model for frozen mixed soils from micro to macro scales. Based on the knowledge of mathematical set theory and limit analysis theory, the support function of frozen soils matrix is derived. The concept of local equivalent strain is proposed to solve the problem of nonuniform deformation caused by rigid inclusions in frozen mixed soils. According to the nonlinear homogenization theory and the Mori-Tanaka method in micromechanics, the strength criterion of frozen mixed soils is established, which can consider coarse particle contents. By introducing the concepts of equivalent yield stress and equivalent plastic deformation, the elastoplastic constitutive model is proposed by the associated flow rule, which can also consider the influence of coarse particle contents. Finally, using the data in the literature, the proposed strength criterion and elastoplastic constitutive model for frozen mixed soil are verified, respectively. The effects of coarse particle contents on the mechanical properties of frozen mixed soils are discussed.
This study presents experimental results from scale model tests on laterally loaded bridge pile foundations in soils subjected to seasonal freezing. A refined finite-element model (FEM) was established and calibrated based on data obtained from the experiments. Furthermore, the model was utilized to investigate the impact of soil scouring depth on the lateral behavior of bridge pile foundations embedded in seasonally frozen soils. The findings indicate that soil freezing significantly enhances the lateral bearing capacity of the pile-soil interaction (PSI) system while reducing lateral deflection of the pile foundation. However, soil freezing results in increased damage to the pile foundation and upward movement of the plastic zone toward the ground surface. Under unfrozen conditions, significant plastic deformations occur on the ground surface and even inside the piles due to the extrusion effect. Additionally, increasing soil scouring depth significantly reduces the lateral bearing capacity of the PSI system while also increasing lateral deflection of the pile foundation for a given load level. Notably, when the scouring depth exceeds 2 m in unfrozen soils, the entire pile experiences obvious deformation and inclination, exhibiting a short-pile behavior that negatively affects the lateral stability of the pile under lateral loads.
The variability in particle morphology significantly impacts the mechanical properties of rockfill materials. To enhance the understanding of this influence, this study collected basalt rockfill particles from 6 different site sources, with their morphology captured by 3D scanning technology, and then the morphological characteristics categorized through cluster analysis. True triaxial tests for these 6 particle groups were simulated using discrete element method (DEM), and the effects of elongation, flatness, convexity, and intermediate principal stress coefficient on the stress-strain relationship and peak strength were qualitatively assessed through principal component analysis (PCA). Further, by controlling the elongation, flatness, and convexity, 3D reconstructed particle models were created by spherical harmonics (SH) analysis, and the true triaxial tests on these models were simulated to quantitatively clarify the influence of morphological parameters on the macroscopic stress- strain relationship, peak strength, microscopic contact, anisotropic evolution, and other characteristics. Considering the size effect in rockfill materials, multi-scale models incorporating particle morphology were further evaluated across four sample scales. The results indicate that, on the macro scale, the three morphological parameters and the middle principal stress coefficient each have substantial effects on peak strength independently, while the interaction among these parameters does not have a notable influence on the strength. With increasing convexity, the peak strength of samples gradually decreases, while an increase in elongation and flatness leads to a trend of initially increasing and then decreasing strength. On the micro scale, the increase in both elongation and flatness results in a more uniform fabric in the main and lateral directions, while the coordination number shows a trend of initially increasing and then decreasing before stabilizing gradually. The influence of elongation on the main direction fabric is slightly smaller than that of flatness, while convexity has minimal effect on these microscopic features. Additionally, the morphological parameters not only impact the deformation capacity of samples but also demonstrate heightened sensitivity to the strength-size relationship of the sample due to interlocking and boundary constraints between particles. This underscores the pivotal role of morphological parameters in governing the mechanical motion of particles during the sample size scaling process, consequently influencing the strength of the material.
Solid particles may experience different kinds of cohesive forces, which cause them to form agglomerates and affect their flow in multiphase systems. When such systems are simulated through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs, appropriate modelling tools must be included to reproduce this feature. In this review, these strategies are addressed for various systems and scales. After an introduction of the different forces (van der Waals, electrostatic, liquid bridge forces, etc.), the modelling approaches are categorized under three methodologies. For diluted slurries of very fine particles, many researchers succeeded with pseudo-single phase approaches, employing a model for the non-Newtonian rheology. This was especially popular for sludges in anaerobic digestions or certain types of soils. In other cases, continuum-based approaches seem to be more adequate, including cohesiveness in the kinetic theory of granular flows or the restitution coefficient. Geldart-A particles experiencing van der Waals forces are the primary focus of such studies. Finally, when each particle is modelled as a discrete element, the cohesive force can be directly specified; this is especially widespread for the wet fluidization case. For each of these approaches, a general overview of the main strategies, achievements, and limits is provided.
This research combines scaled model experiments with theoretical analysis to investigate the impact of underground utility tunnels (UUTs) on foundation bearing capacity and to examine the interaction between soil-rock composite strata and the stress-strain responses of the tunnel. The findings indicate that UUTs alter the foundation mechanism by reducing soil depth, streamlining the load transfer path, and causing stress to converge at the tunnel's top. Additionally, the results reveal that the influence range of the tunnel on both sides is approximately 1.5 times its width and remains unaffected by the position of load application, the tunnel's burial depth, or the width of the composite stratum. Moreover, when the width of the soil-rock composite stratum equals the width of the tunnel, the tunnel experiences a laterally flexural stress state. Within this specific stratum context, the central axis area of the tunnel roof and the connection with the side panels represent the core sensitive areas for crack initiation and propagation. In the failure scenario, the tunnel roof displays typical characteristics of fracture and depression, with the damage degree decreasing from the load center towards both ends. Meanwhile, the side panels do not exhibit characteristics of plastic deformation. This research provides a theoretical framework for the design, construction, and maintenance of UUTs, emphasizing its practical significance in engineering.
Based on a prototype of the Beijing subway tunnel, this research conducts large-scale model experiments to systematically investigate the vibration response patterns of tunnels with different damage levels under the influence of measured train loads. Initially, the polynomial fitting modal identification method (Levy) and the model test preparation process are introduced. Then, using time-domain peak acceleration, frequency response function, frequency-domain modal frequency, and modal shape indicators, a detailed analysis of the tunnel's dynamic response is conducted. The results indicate that damage significantly amplifies vibration acceleration, with the amplification increasing with the severity of the damage. When the crack lengths are 2 cm, 4 cm, and 6 cm, the peak acceleration increases by 25.12%, 36.35%, and 50.29%, respectively, while adjacent segments show increases of 13%, 29%, and 45%. Damage decreases the tunnel structure's modal frequency, with the first two modal frequencies showing the most significant reductions of 9.87% and 7.34%, respectively. The adjacent segments show reductions of 7.7% and 4.2%. As the severity of the damage increases, the amplitude of the modal shape at the damaged location also increases, with the first modal shape rising by 43.37% for 4 cm damage compared to 2 cm damage and by 72.21% for 6 cm damage. The second modal shape increases by 9.04% and 26.51%, respectively. Additionally, the effectiveness of the polynomial fitting modal identification method (Levy) for tunnel structural damage detection was validated. Finally, based on the methods outlined above, the tunnel responses measured on-site in the Beijing metro were also analyzed. The findings of this study provide important theoretical support for the assessment and routine maintenance of metro tunnels.
This paper investigates the mechanical response of coral sand under particle breakage using a hierarchical multiscale model combining the discrete element method (DEM) and the finite element method (FEM). This DEM-FEM model links the microscopic interaction mechanisms to macroscopic phenomena such as strain localization and failure. A cohesive contact model was first utilized to simulate compaction bands in the DEM and construct a cohesive assembly with smaller particles distributed around a larger particle to better simulate the grinding and angular breakage of coral sand. A representative volume element (RVE) that includes particle breakage was then constructed and analyzed under periodic boundary conditions. DEM analysis was performed, and the results were compared with triaxial compression test data obtained from the literature, demonstrating that the constructed RVE effectively represents the mechanical properties of coral sand. The constructed RVE was used for hierarchical multiscale simulations, which showed good agreement with existing triaxial testing of coral sand. Finally, by setting a larger cohesive force, the constructed coral sand particles were prevented from breakage, and comparative analysis revealed that particle breakage weakens the mechanical properties of coral sand. Furthermore, different shapes of coral sand particles were constructed, and RVE and hierarchical multiscale simulations of triaxial tests were performed. The results indicated that the triaxial tests of long strip-shaped coral sand particles exhibit higher peak values compared to spherical coral sand particles. Additionally, a double porosity model of coral sand was constructed to analyze the impact of internal porosity on soil mechanical properties. The results showed that the presence of internal porosity significantly weakened the mechanical properties of coral sand. These findings highlight the significant impact of particle breakage and shape on the mechanical behavior of coral sand, offering important insights for engineering applications.
