Emerging contaminants and climate change are major challenges that soil organisms are facing today. Triclosan (TCS), an antibacterial agent, is widespread and hazardous in terrestrial environments, but there is a lack of information on how its toxicity will change because of climate change. The aim of the study was to evaluate the short-term effects of increased temperature, decreased soil moisture content (drought), and their complex interaction on triclosan-induced biochemical changes in Eisenia fetida (as well as growth and survival). Four different treatments were used in TCS-contaminated soil tests with E. fetida (10-750 mg TCS kg-1): C (21 degrees C + 60 % water holding capacity (WHC)), D (21 degrees C and 30 % WHC), T (25 degrees C + 60 % WHC), and T + D (25 degrees C + 30 % WHC). The more prominent TCS effect on the survival was seen only after two weeks and at the high TCS concentrations, though a negative effect on weight growth was recorded after one week of exposure at all tested TCS concentrations and climate conditions. Under standard (C) conditions, an activated E. fetida antioxidative system effectively reduced the oxidative stress induced by TCS. Changes in the climatic conditions influenced E. fetid a's biochemical response to TCS-induced oxidative stress. Despite the enhanced activity of antioxidant enzymes, the combination of drought (D) and TCS caused significant lipid peroxidation in E. fetida. Under elevated temperature, E. fetida experienced oxidative stress and a considerable rise in lipid peroxidation due to insufficient activation or inhibition of antioxidant enzymes.

Greece's olive oil production is significantly affected by the olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae (Diptera: Tephritidae), and its presence is perceived when it is too late to act for damage recovery. In this work, some unexplored entomopathogenic fungi (EPFs) were studied for their efficacy on olive fruit fly pupae in soil samples. Olive grove soil samples were collected to evaluate the effect of EPFs in their natural environment. The parameters that were analyzed to evaluate the performance of EPFs on B. oleae included the adult survival time, pupa hatch time, and the presence of mycelium on B. oleae pupae and dead adults. The efficacy of some EPFs was highlighted by the mycelium present on dead B. oleae adults after treating pupae with fungal isolates on the soil substrate. The results showed that for the soil substrate, external fungal growth was observed in dead adults with A. contaminans, A. keveii, A. flavus P. lilacinum, and T. annesophieae (100%). Remarkably, the lowest male proportion for soil and non-soil substrates was for A. flavus (0.41-0.42) for the first time, for A. keveii (0.36), and for P. citreosulfuratum (0.41) on the soil-only substrate in contrast to the control treatment (0.5 for both substrates). Given the high infestation caused by the olive fruit flies in Greece, the results of the study emphasize to use of incorporating certain EPF-based biopesticides into integrated pest management (IPM) programs.

Snow cover variation significantly impacts alpine vegetation dynamics on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), yet this effect under climate change remains underexplored. This study uses a survival analysis model to assess the influence of snow on vegetation green-up dynamics, while controlling for key temperature and water availability factors. This analysis integrates multi-source data, including satellite-derived vegetation green-up dates (GUDs), snow depth, accumulated growing degree days (AGDD), downward shortwave radiation (SRAD), precipitation, and soil moisture. Our survival analysis model effectively simulated GUD on the TP, achieving an R of 0.62 (p < 0.01), a root mean square error (RMSE) of 11.20 days, and a bias of -1.41 days for 2020 GUD predictions. It outperformed both the model excluding snow depth and a linear regression model. By isolating snow's impact, we found it exerts a stronger influence on vegetation GUD than precipitation in snow-covered areas of the TP. Furthermore, snow depth effects varied seasonally: a 1-cm increase in preseason snow depth reduced green-up rates by 8.48% before 156(th) day but increased them by 4.74% afterward. This indicates that deeper preseason snow cover delays GUD before June, but advances it from June onward, rather than having a uniform effect. These findings highlight the critical role of snow and underscore the need to incorporate its distinct effects into vegetation phenology models in alpine regions.

BackgroundThe fungal phytopathogen Zymoseptoria tritici, causal agent of the economically damaging Septoria tritici blotch of wheat, is different from most foliar fungal pathogens in that its germination occurs slowly and apparently randomly after arrival on the leaf surface and is followed by a potentially prolonged period of epiphytic growth and even reproduction, during which no feeding structures are formed by the fungus. Thus, understanding the cues for germination and the mechanisms that underpin survival in low-nutrient environments could provide key new avenues for disease control.ResultsIn this work, we examine survival, culturability and virulence of spores following transfer from a high nutrient environment to water. We find that a sub-population of Z. tritici spores can survive and remain virulent for at least 7 weeks in water alone, during which time multicellular structures split to single cells. The fungus relies heavily on stored lipids; however, if cell suspensions in water are dried, the cells survive without lipid utilisation. Changes in gene expression in the first hours after suspension in water reflect adaptation to stress, while longer term starvation (7 days) induces changes particularly in primary metabolism and cytochrome P450 (CYP) gene expression. Importantly, we also found that Z. tritici spores are equally or better able to survive in soil as in water, and that rain-splash occurring 49 days after soil inoculation can transfer cells to wheat seedlings growing in inoculated soil and cause Septoria leaf blotch disease.ConclusionsZ. tritici blastospores can survive in water or soil for long periods, potentially spanning the intercrop period for UK winter wheat. They rely on internal lipid stores, with no external nutrition, and although a large proportion of spores do not survive for such an extended period, those that do remain as virulent as spores grown on rich media. Thus, Z. tritici has exceptional survival strategies, which are likely to be important in understanding its population genetics and in developing novel routes for Septoria leaf blotch control.

Agriculture has gained increasing importance in response to the continuous growth of the world population and constant need for food. To avoid production losses, farmers commonly use pesticides. Mancozeb is a fungicide used in agriculture as this compound is effective in combating fungi that harm crops. However, this fungicide may also produce damage to non-target organisms present in soil and water. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the influence of exposure to mancozeb on survival rate, locomotor activity, behavior, and oxidative status utilizing adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model following exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of this pesticide. The experimental groups were negative control, positive control, and mancozeb (0.3; 1.02; 3.47; 11.8 or 40 mu g/L). Zebrafish were exposed to the respective treatments for 96 hr. Exposure to mancozeb did not markedly alter survival rate and oxidative status of Danio rerio. At a concentration of 11.8 mu g/L, the fungicide initiated changes in locomotor pattern of the animals. The results obtained suggest that the presence of mancozeb in the environment might produce locomotor alterations in adult zebrafish, which subsequently disrupt the animals' innate defense mechanisms. In nature, this effect attributed to mancozeb on non-target organisms might result in adverse population impacts and ecological imbalance.

Acacia hybrid (Acacia mangium Willd. x A. auriculiformis A. Cunn. Ex Benth.) dominates plantation wood production in central Vietnam. Dependence on a single species may increase biological risks. The potential of eucalypt as an alternative was examined by comparing the growth and survival of acacia hybrid and eucalypt hybrid (Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake x E. pellita F. Muell.) clones in Quang Tri province at three planting densities (1333, 1667 and 2222 trees ha-1). The experiment was planted on an eroded shallow soil common in the region. At age 5 years, survival of acacia (74%) was higher than that of eucalypt (67%), a consequence of high mortality from wind damage for one eucalypt clone. Eucalypt was taller by about 2 m, but stem diameters of acacia and eucalypt were very similar. For both taxa, diameter decreased significantly as planting density increased. Across planting densities, mean standing volume was 107 and 108 m3 ha-1 for acacia and eucalyptus, respectively. Linear regressions of stocking at 5 years on volume accounted for over half of the variance in acacia and eucalypt plot volumes, demonstrating the strong effect of stocking on yield. There were similarly strong effects of stocking on stem diameter. Acacia hybrid plantations of nearby small growers had stockings at age 5 years that averaged over 2500 stems ha-1. Growers planted at higher densities and allowed their trees to multi-stem. Their standing volumes at age 5 years ranged from 83 to 102 m3 ha-1. Understanding how to reduce tree mortality would assist growers to choose planting densities and stand management that optimise growth, log diameter classes and net returns.

Accurate knowledge of site conditions and their effects on regeneration establishment is important for selecting the most appropriate tree species and regeneration methods for a given regeneration site. This study examined the response of the first-year field performance of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) seedlings in boreal forests to variables available in open forest and natural resources datasets. Survival, height increment and damage of planted tree seedlings and the success of direct seeding of pine were analysed on a total of 284 plots (1000 m(2)) in 18 regeneration experiments established in 2020-2022 in southern and central Finland. The height increment of silver birch was higher than that of conifers, while the lowest mortality rate was found for spruce. In the generalised linear mixed models, topographic wetness index, soil texture, site type and growing stock at clearcut explained the species-specific survival and height increment of planted seedlings and the success of pine seeding. Low-cost, open geospatial data effectively provide useful details on the site conditions suitable for diversifying tree species composition in boreal forests instead of monocultures.

Iron is a common and essential element for maintaining life in bacteria, plants and animals and is found in soil, fresh waters and marine waters; however, over exposure is toxic to organisms. Iron is used in electron transport complexes within mitochondria as well as a co-factor in many essential proteins. It is also established that iron accumulation in the central nervous system in mammals is associated with various neurological disorders. Ample studies have investigated the long-term effects of iron overload in the nervous system. However, its acute effects in nervous tissue and additional organ systems warrant further studies. This study investigates the effects of iron overload on development, behavior, survival, cardiac function, and glutamatergic synaptic transmission in the Drosophila melanogaster. Additionally, physiological responses in crayfish were examined following Fe3+ exposure. Fe3+ reduced neuronal excitability in proprioceptive neurons in a crayfish model. Thus, Fe3+ may block stretch activated channels (SACs) as well as voltage-gated Na+ channels. Exposure also rapidly reduces synaptic transmission but does not block ionotropic glutamatergic receptors, suggesting a blockage of pre-synaptic voltage-gated Ca2+ channels in both crustacean and Drosophila models. The effects are partly reversible with acute exposure, indicating the cells are not rapidly damaged. This study is relevant in demonstrating the effects of Fe3+ on various physiological functions in different organisms in order to further understand the acute and long-term consequences of overload.

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that is of great concern in agroecosystems due to its toxicity to plants, herbivores, carnivores, and human beings. The current study evaluated the allocation and bioaccumulation of Cd from soil to cotton plants, cotton plants to herbivore pests, and herbivorous pests to a natural enemy predator. When soil was spiked with 100 mg/kg Cd, results demonstrated that cotton roots accumulated more Cd than the stems and leaves. The bioaccumulation of Cd was less in 4th instar larvae, pupa, and adults of Serangium japonicum than in Bemisia tabaci adults. The bioaccumulation in S. japonicum elongated the immature development period and reduced adult longevity, oviposition days, fertility, and total pre-oviposition duration. The net reproduction of S. japonicum was also reduced, as was female mature weight and feeding potential; as a result, Cd exposure could reduce the future population size compared to uncontaminated populations. There was decreased activity of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and POD) and energy-conserving lipids (glycogen, triglyceride, and total cholesterol) in Cd-contaminated S. japonicum compared to controls. The detoxifying enzyme activity of GST and P450 increased while AChE activity did not change. The qRT-PCR research showed that SOD1, CAT, POD, glycogen, and triglyceride gene expression was higher than in controls, whereas detoxification gene expression did not change. Our results indicate that Cd exposure has a physiological trade-off between its adverse effects on life history traits and elevated detoxification and antioxidation of S. japonicum, which could result from gene expression alteration. Further studies are needed to assess whether Cd exposure causes irreversible DNA damage in S. japonicum.

Although response of microbial community to arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) co-contamination has been investigated in neutral and acidic environments, little is known in alkaline environment. Herein, the microbial response and survival strategies under the stress of As and Sb co-contamination were determined in the alkaline sediments. Elevated concentrations of As (13700 +/- 5012 mg/kg) and Sb (10222 +/- 1619 mg/kg) were introduced into the alkaline sediments by the mine drainage, which was partially adopted in the aquatic environment and resulted in a relatively lower contamination (As, 6633 +/- 1707 mg/kg; Sb, 6108 +/- 1095 mg/kg) in the down-stream sediments. The microbial richness was significantly damaged and the microbial compositions were dramatically shifted by the As and Sb co-contamination. Metagenomic analysis shed light on the survival strategies of the microbes under the pressure of As and Sb co-contamination including metal oxidation coupled with denitrification, metal reduction, and metal resistance. The representative microbes were revealed in the sediments with higher (Halomonas) and lower (Thiobacillus, Hydrogenophaga and Flavihumibacter) As and Sb con-centration, respectively. In addition, antibiotic resistance genes were found to co-occur with metal resistance genes in the assembled bins. These findings might provide theoretical guidance for bioremediation of As and Sb co-contamination in alkaline environment.
