The reasonable value of good gradation characteristic parameters is key in designing and optimising soil-rock mixed high fill embankment materials. Firstly, the DJSZ-150 dynamic-static large-scale triaxial testing instrument was used for triaxial compression shear tests on compacted skeleton structure soil-rock mixture standard specimens. The changes in strength and deformation indicators under different gradation parameters and confining pressure were analysed. Then, based on the Janbu empirical formula, relationships between parameters K, n, and (sigma 1-sigma 3)ult and the coefficient of uniformity Cu and coefficient of curvature Cc were explored. Empirical fitting formulas for Duncan-Chang model constants a and b were proposed, establishing an improved Duncan-Chang model for soil-rock mixtures considering gradation characteristics and stress states. Finally, based on significant differences in particle spatial distribution caused by gradation changes, three generalised models of matrix-block stone motion from different particle aggregation forms were proposed. Results indicate the standard specimen's strength and deformation indicators exhibit significant gradation effects and stress-state correlations. The improved Duncan-Chang model effectively simulates the stress-strain relationship curve under different gradations and confining pressure, with its characteristics explainable based on the matrix block stone motion generalised model.

Soft soil subgrades often present significant geotechnical challenges under cyclic loading conditions associated with major infrastructure developments. Moreover, there has been a growing interest in employing various recycled tire derivatives in civil engineering projects in recent years. To address these challenges sustainably, this study investigates the performance of granular piles incorporating recycled tire chips as a partial replacement for conventional aggregates. The objective is to evaluate the cyclic behavior of these tire chip-aggregate mixtures and determining the optimum mix for enhancing soft soil performance. A series of laboratory-scale, stress-controlled cyclic loading tests were conducted on granular piles encased with combi-grid under end-bearing conditions. The granular piles were constructed using five volumetric proportions of (tire chips: aggregates) (%) of 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0. The tests were performed with a cyclic loading amplitude (qcy) of 85 kPa and a frequency (fcy) of 1 Hz. Key performance indicators such as normalized cyclic induced settlement (Sc/Dp), normalized excess pore water pressure in soil bed (Pexc/Su), and pile-soil stress distribution in terms of stress concentration ratio (n) were analyzed to assess the effectiveness of the different mixtures. Results indicate that the ordinary granular pile (OGP) with (25 % tire chips + 75 % aggregates) offers an optimal balance between performance and sustainability. This mixture reduced cyclic-induced settlement by 86.7 % compared to the OGP with (0 % TC + 100 % AG), with only marginal losses in performance (12.3 % increase in settlement and 2.8 % reduction in stress transfer efficiency). Additionally, the use of combi-grid encasement significantly improved the overall performance of all granular pile configurations, enhancing stress concentration and reducing both settlement and excess pore water pressure. These findings demonstrate the viability of using recycled tire chips as a sustainable alternative in granular piles, offering both environmental and engineering benefits for soft soil improvement under cyclic loading.

Soil-rock mixtures (SRMs) are characterized by heterogeneous structural features that lead to multiscale mechanical evolution under varying cementation conditions. However, the shear failure mechanisms of cemented SRMs (CSRMs) remain insufficiently explored in existing studies. In this work, a heterogeneous threedimensional (3D) discrete element model (DEM) was developed for CSRMs, with parameters meticulously calibrated to examine the role of matrix-block interfaces under different volumetric block proportions (VBPs). At the macroscopic scale, significant influences of the interface state on the peak strength of CSRMs were observed, whereas the residual strength was found to be largely insensitive to the interface cementation properties. Pronounced dilatancy behaviour was identified in the postpeak and residual phases, with a positive correlation with both interface cementation and VBP. Quantitative particle-scale analyses revealed substantial heterogeneity and anisotropy in the contact force network of CSRMs across different components. A highly welded interface was shown to reduce the number of interface cracks at the peak strength state while increasing the proportion of tensile cracks within the interface zone. Furthermore, the welding degree of the interface was found to govern the formation and morphology of shear cracking surfaces at the peak strength state. Nevertheless, a reconstruction method for the shear slip surface was proposed to demonstrate that, at the same VBP, the primary roughness of the slip surfaces remained consistent and was independent of the interface properties. Based on the extended simulations, the peak strength of the weakly welded CSRMs progressively decreased with increasing VBP, whereas further exploration of the enhanced residual strength is needed.

The cumulative plastic deformation and damage evolution of frozen soil-rock mixtures under cyclic loading was studied by a dynamic triaxial instrument with real-time resistivity measurement function. A series of low- temperature cyclic triaxial tests were conducted under varying confining pressures (200 kPa, 500 kPa, 800 kPa), block proportions (0, 30 %, 40 %, 50 %), and dynamic stress ratios (0.4, 0.6, 0.8). The results reveal that the cumulative plastic deformation process can be divided into three stages, such as microcrack closure as the initial stage, crack steady growth as the middle stage, and rapid crack propagation until it fails as the final stage. Under the same number of cycles, the greater the dynamic stress is, the greater the cumulative plastic deformation is. Furthermore, a strong correlation is identified between the resistivity and the cumulative plastic deformation. With the increase of the number of cycles, the cumulative plastic deformation leads to the accumulation of internal damage, and the resistivity gradually increases. Thus, a damage evolution model based on resistivity damage variables is proposed. The model demonstrated an average fitting accuracy of 97.36 % with the experimental data.

Soil-rock mixtures (SRM) from mine overburden form heterogeneous dump slopes, whose stability relies on their shear strength properties. This study investigates the shear strength properties and deformation characteristics of SRM in both in-situ and laboratory conditions. Total twelve in-situ tests were conducted on SRM samples with a newly developed large scale direct shear apparatus (60 cm x 60 cm x 30 cm). The in-situ moist density and moisture content of SRM are determined. Particle size distribution is performed to characterize the SRM in laboratory. The bottom bench has the highest cohesion (64 kPa) due to high compaction over time while the other benches have consistent cohesion values (25 kPa to33 kPa). The laboratory estimated cohesion values are high compared to in-situ condition. It is further observed that for in-situ samples, the moist density notably affects the cohesion of SRM, with cohesion decreasing by 3 to 5 % for every 1 % increase in moist density. At in-situ condition, internal friction angles are found to be 1.5 to 1.7 times compared to laboratory values which is due to the presence of the bigger sized particles in the SRM. The outcomes of the research are very informative and useful for geotechnical engineers for slope designing and numerical modeling purpose.

Rainfall-induced debris slides are a major geological hazard in the Himalayan region, where slopes often comprise heterogeneous debris-a complex mixture of rock and soil. The complex nature makes traditional soil or rock testing methods inadequate for assessing such debris's engineering behaviour and failure mechanisms. Alternatively, reduced-scale flume experiments may aid in understanding the failure process of debris slopes. Here, we present findings from reduced-scale laboratory flume experiments performed under varying slope angles (ranging from shallow to steep), initial volumetric water contents (ranging from dry to wet), and rainfall intensities (ranging from light to heavy) using debris materials with a median grain size (D50) 20.7 mm sampled from a rainfall-induced debris slide site in the Himalayas. Hydrological variables, including volumetric water content and matric suction, were monitored using sensors, while slope displacement was tracked indirectly, and rainfall was monitored using rain gauges. The entire failure process was captured via video recording, and index and shear strength tests were performed to characterize the debris material. Our results reveal that the failure of debris slopes is not driven by sudden increases in pore water pressure but by the loss of unsaturated shear strength due to reduced matric suction and a decreased frictional strength from reduced particle contact between grains during rainfall. We also find that the saturation of debris slope by rainfall was quick irrespective of the slope angles and initial moisture contents, revealing the proneness of debris slopes to rainfall-induced failures. These findings provide critical insights into the stability of debris materials and have important implications for improving risk assessment and mitigation strategies for rainfall-induced debris slides in the Himalayas and similar regions worldwide.

Overall, the review suggests that the strategic integration of calcined clays and nanoclays into construction materials can enhance durability, optimise resource use, and support environmental sustainability.

This paper presents a method to create rubber clumps without significant volume loss within the framework of the discrete-element method (DEM), enhancing the understanding of particle-scale stress transmission and small strain behavior of sand-rubber mixtures. Extensive calibrations were conducted, including the compressive response of individual pure rubber clumps, the small strain stiffness and the shear behavior of pure rubber specimens. These calibrations aimed to accurately capture the key characteristics of rubber materials, including their deformability. The calibrated model was then used to study the mechanics of sand-rubber mixtures. The simulation data indicated a higher coordination number for rubber clumps, a result of their greater deformability and significant sensitivity to stress levels in comparison with sand grains. The research has further demonstrated that the proportion of the overall stress transferred by the rubber remained below its volumetric content, highlighting its significant sensitivity to stress and density levels, which are characteristics not significant in sand particles. Additionally, the small strain stiffness values of sand-rubber mixtures decrease with increasing rubber contents, reflecting the negligible contributions of rubber materials on small-strain stiffness. This observation supports the validity of refined state variables that exclude rubber materials when characterizing the small-strain behavior of sand-rubber mixtures. While this research is fundamental, the data presented herein can be useful to engineers working on embedding waste materials such as granular rubber in engineered fill.

The proportional strain loading test is a prevalent method for investigation diffuse instability. The majority of current research concentrates on narrowly graded materials, with relatively less focus on binary mixtures under proportional strain loading. Therefore, a series of numerical tests have been conducted using the discrete element method to study the influence of fine content and strain increment ratio on the binary mixtures. The test results show that the fine content of binary mixtures is intimately connected to the critical strain increment ratio which precipitate a transition from stability to instability. Binary mixtures characterized by a low stress ratio at the onset of instability also demonstrate a heightened sensitivity to shifts in strain increment ratio. The macroscopic responses, such as the stress ratio at the onset of instability, shear strength, and pore water pressure, exhibit different trends of variation with the fine content compared to microscopic responses, including coordination number, friction mobilization index, and the proportion of sliding contacts. Furthermore, the anisotropy coefficient is introduced to dissect the sources of anisotropy at onset of instability, revealing that strong contact fabric anisotropy can mirror the evolution of the stress ratio. The stress ratio at onset of instability is predominantly influenced by anisotropy in contact normal and normal contact force.

We present a constitutive model for the mechanical behavior of granular flow for both solid-like and fluid-like regimes. The stress rate tensor is decomposed into rate-independent and rate-dependent parts. The hypoplastic model is used for the rate-independent part, while the mu(I)$\mu (I)$-type rheological model is employed for the rate-dependent part. The Stokes number is introduced to capture the influence of interstitial fluid viscosity within the rate-dependent part of the model. The model performance is demonstrated through numerical simulations of element tests, encompassing both granular materials and granular-fluid mixtures.
