Wear-resistant high manganese steel/WC composite coatings with twinning-induced hardening ability prepared by laser cladding

Although high manganese steel (HMS) has high twinning-induced hardening ability, its wear resistance decreases due to the inability to fully utilize its work hardening capacity at the initial stage of service. To address this issue, this study prepared an HMS/WC composite coating with wear resistance by adjusting the content of WC in HMS (0, 10 wt%, 20 wt%, and 40 wt%) using laser cladding technology. However, it is still worth investigating whether the HMS/WC composite coating can retain the austenitic structure and the ability of twinning-induced hardening. In this experiment, the counterbodies used in the sliding wear process were Al 2O 3 balls. The results demonstrated that the hardness and wear resistance of WC-reinforced HMS coatings were significantly higher than those of the pure HMS coating. The as-prepared HMS composite coating (20 wt% WC) exhibited a 34% higher initial hardness than the pure HMS coating, attributed to the strengthening effect of WC on the coating. After wear, the hardness of the composite coating (20 wt% WC) further increased by 112%, resulting from twinning-induced plastic deformation of HMS. A large number of deformation twins were generated in the composite coating after wear, and the interactions between these twins further enhanced the twinning hardening ability of the HMS/WC composite coating, ultimately improving its hardness and wear resistance. Finally, the microstructural evolution and hardening mechanisms of the HMS/WC composite coatings were illustrated. This study provides an innovative solution for manufacturing HMS components with enhanced wear resistance under the condition of low stress.
