Backfill mining is a lucrative method for extracting coal buried under buildings, and water bodies, which can substantially increase the resource usage efficiency by mitigating the strata movement and surface subsidence. Its effectiveness depends on the mechanical properties of granular backfill materials. A permeability test was performed on gangue and fly ash samples under different stress levels using an original seepage test system. The variation patterns of the broken rock's internal pressure and permeability were determined. The test results indicate the weakening of the seepage effect on granular materials and a gradual reduction of washed away fly ash. The permeability values fall into the range of 3.2 x 10(-15) similar to 3.2 x 10(-13)m(-2), and non-Darcy factor is between 3.2 x 10(10) and 3.2 x 10(12) m(-1). This phenomenon was more pronounced in samples with smaller particle sizes. As the axial stress increased, the backfill material showed a decline in permeability and an increase in the non-Darcy flow coefficient. As the content of fly ash increased, the mass loss grew sharply, which occurred mainly at the early seepage stage. The results are considered instrumental in the characterization of water and sand inrush.

Abandoned farmlands are increasing due to socio-economic changes and land marginalization, and they require sustainable land management practices. Biocrusts are a common cover on the topsoil of abandoned farmlands and play an important role in improving soil stability and erosion resistance. The critical functions of biocrusts are known to mostly rely on their biofilaments and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), but how these components act at microscopic scale is still unknown, while rheological methods are able to provide new insights into biocrust microstructural stability at particle scale. Here, bare soil and two representative types of biocrusts (cyanobacterial and moss crusts) developed on sandy (Ustipsamments) and sandy loam (Haplustepts) soils in abandoned farmlands in the northern Chinese Loess Plateau were collected at a sampling depth of 2 cm. Changes in the rheological properties of the biocrusts were analyzed with respect to their biofilament network and EPS contents to provide possible explanations. The rheological results showed that compared with bare soil, storage and loss moduli were decreased by the biocrusts on sandy soil, but they were increased by the biocrusts on sandy loam soil. Other rheological parameters tau max, gamma L, gamma YP, and Iz of biocrusts on both soils were significantly higher than those of bare soil, showing higher viscoelasticity. And the moss crusts had about 10 times higher rheological property values than the cyanobacterial crusts. Analysis from SEM images showed that the moss crusts had higher biofilament network parameters than the cyanobacterial crusts, including nodes, crosslink density, branches, branching ratio and mesh index, and biofilament density, indicating that the biofilament network structure in the moss crusts was more compact and complex in contrast to the cyanobacterial crusts. Additionally, EPS content of the moss crusts was higher than that of the cyanobacterial crusts on both soils. Overall, the crosslink density, biofilament density, and EPS content of the biocrusts were significantly and positively correlated with their gamma YP and Iz. The interaction between crosslink density and biofilament density contributed 73.2 % of gamma YP, and that between crosslink density and EPS content contributed 84.0 % of Iz. Our findings highlight the biocrusts-induced changes of abandoned farmland soil rheological properties in drylands, and the importance of biocrust biofilament network and EPS in maintaining abandoned farmland soil microstructural stability to resist soil water/wind erosion and degradation, providing a new perspective for sustainable management of abandoned farmlands.

Biological soil crusts (BSCs; biocrusts) are well developed in drylands, which are crucial to the stability and resilience of dryland ecosystems. In the southeastern Gurbantunggut Desert, a typical sandy desert in the middle part of central Asia, engineering development has an increasing negative impact on ecosystems. Fortunately, ecological restoration measures are being implemented, but the exact effect on soil quality is still unclear. In artificial sand-fixing sites on reshaped dunes along the west-east desert road, a total of 80 quadrats (1 m x 1 m) of reed checkerboards after the implementation of sand-fixing measures for 10 years were investigated to determine the BSC development status and soil properties. The algal and lichen crusts accounted for 48.75 % and 26.25 % of the total quadrat number, respectively, indicating an obvious recovery effect of BSC (only 25 % for bare sand). The developmental level of BSC gradually increased from the top to the bottom of the dunes (Li 0 -> Li 6),which was consistent with the distribution pattern of BSCs on natural dunes. Compared with bare sand, the soil organic carbon (13.85 % and 23.07 % increases), total nitrogen (12.55 % and 23.95 % increases), total potassium (9.30 % and 8.24 % increases), and available nitrogen (23.97 % and 61.41 % increases) contents of algal and lichen crusts were significantly increased, and lichen crusts had markedly higher increase effect than algal crusts. The BSC development markedly reduced soil pH (0.49 % and 0.50 % decreased) and increased electrical conductivity(11.99 % and 10.68 % increases), resulting in improved soil microenvironment. Soil properties showed significant linear relationships with BSC development level, and an optimal fitting (R2 = 0.770 or 0.780) was detected for the soil fertility index. Based on the soil property matrix, the bare sands, algal, and lichen crusts were markedly separated along the first axis in the PCA biplot, which once again confirmed the significant positive effect of BSC recovery on soil fertility improvement. Consequently, in the early stage of sand-fixation (e.g., < = 10 years) by reed checkerboards on the damaged desert surface, BSC recovery can well promote and predict soil fertility in this area. The results provide a reliable theoretical basis for the restoration technology and scientific management of degraded sandy desert ecosystems.

The delayed breakage of particles significantly affects the long-term mechanical properties of rockfill materials. This study examines the effects of particle strength dispersion on the distribution of time-dependent strength using fracture mechanics and probabilistic methods. Subsequently, the distribution of normalized maximum contact force (NMCF), defined as the ratio of the maximum contact force to instantaneous strength, for specimens with uniform particle size is derived using extreme value theory and Discrete Element Method (DEM). Based on this analysis, the probabilities of delayed breakage in rockfill specimens over various time intervals are calculated using a joint probability delayed breakage criterion. The feasibility of the proposed method is validated by comparing theoretical calculation with DEM triaxial creep simulation results that accounted for particle breakage. The findings offer innovative tools and theoretical insights for understanding and predicting the particle delayed breakage behavior of rockfill materials and for developing macro-micro creep crushing constitutive models.

The use of mixed forests and non-native tree species have the potential to mitigate climate change impacts and enhance biodiversity. However, little is known about how forest composition and environmental factors affect each step of natural regeneration in mixed forests, especially in mixtures with non-native trees. Here we investigated how forest composition affected European beech seed survival (through seed tracking), seed sprouting (via field germination experiments), and seedling survival (monthly seedling monitoring) in pure beech forests and in admixtures with Norway spruce and the introduced Douglas-fir in a mast and non-mast year of beech. We also assessed how biotic and abiotic factors (small mammal abundance, ungulate access, seed production, seed burial, canopy cover, distance to nearest adult tree, seedling aggregation, understory density, browsing damage, and soil properties) affected these regeneration dynamics. Seed survival was negatively affected by the presence of conifers and mouse abundance. Seed germination was influenced by whether seeds were buried or not. Seedling survival increased in Douglas-fir admixtures, and in forests with higher soil quality. Browsing damage and ungulate access diminished seedling survival. Seed production had the greatest influence on absolute number of seedlings. Forest composition and environmental factors had distinct impacts on regeneration of beech depending on its ontogenetic stage. Here, we provide evidence supporting the notion that Douglas-fir is not impairing the regeneration of native trees in mixed forests. In fact, mixtures with Douglas-fir benefited the survival of beech seedlings, likely due to better soil properties and less damage from herbivores on these stands.

The breakage phenomenon has gained attention from geotechnical and mining engineers primarily due to its pivotal influence on the mechanical response of granular soils. Numerous researchers performed laboratory tests on crushable soils and incorporated the corresponding effects into numerical simulations. A systematic review of various studies is crucial for gaining insight into the current state of knowledge and for illuminating the required developments for upcoming research projects. The current state-of-the-art study summarizes both experimental evidence and numerical approaches, particularly focusing on discrete element simulations and constitutive models used to describe the behavior of crushable soils. The review begins by exploring particle breakage quantification, delving into experimental evidence to elucidate its influence on the mechanical behavior of granular soils, and examining the factors that affect the breakage phenomenon. In this context, the accuracy of various indices in estimating the extent of breakage has been assessed through ten series of experiments conducted on different crushable soils. Furthermore, alternative breakage indices are suggested for constitutive models to track the evolution of particle crushing under continuous shearing. Regarding numerical modeling, the review covers different approaches using the discrete element method (DEM) for simulating the behavior of crushable particulate media, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Additionally, different families of constitutive models, including elastoplasticity, hypoplasticity, and thermodynamically based approaches, are analyzed. The performance of one model from each group is evaluated in simulating the response of Tacheng rockfill material under drained triaxial tests. Finally, new insights into the development of constitutive models and areas requiring further investigation utilizing DEM have been highlighted.

Effective erosion mitigation in the Pisha sandstone region is crucial for soil and water conservation in the Yellow River Basin, yet existing vegetation measures are inadequate in water-limited environments. This study examines the application of drought-tolerant biological soil crusts (biocrusts) for erosion control on sandstone slopes and evaluates their erosion-reducing effects under varying coverage and slope conditions through controlled artificial rainfall experiments. Key findings include: (1) biocrusts coverage demonstrated a linear relationship with initial runoff generation time and an exponential relationship with stable runoff generation time. On average, biocrusts delayed initial runoff generation by 396.32 % and extended stable runoff generation time by 153.93 %, thereby increasing the threshold for both initial and stable runoff generation on Pisha-sandstone surfaces. (2) biocrusts reduced runoff volume by an average of 23.89 %, enhanced infiltration volume by 69.19 %, decreased sediment yield by 64.24 %, and lowered the soil erosion modulus by 68.98 %. These results indicated significant promotion of water infiltration and reduction of water erosion. Both effects were positively influenced by coverage and negatively impacted by slope gradient. A critical slope angle of 15 degrees and a critical coverage of 60 % were identified. When the slope was gentle (S 15 degrees), the negative impact of slope predominated, diminishing the positive effect of biocrusts. Additionally, when coverage reached or exceeded 60 %, further increaseing in coverage accelerated the enhancement of infiltration and erosion reduction. Below this threshold, the rate of improvement gradually diminished with increasing coverage. (3) The structural equation model further elucidated that biocrusts mitigate erosion by enhancing the coverage, thereby reducing runoff velocity and modifying the runoff regime. This mechanism effectively dissipates runoff energy, leading to a decreased soil detachment rate and alleviation of soil erosion. Additionally, the relationship between runoff energy and soil detachment rate follows a power function curve, providing an effective method for predicting erosion in Pisha sandstone area. Consequently, biological soil crust technology shows considerable potential for preventing water erosion damage on Pisha sandstone slopes across various gradients.

This study investigates the mechanical properties and damage processes of cement-consolidated soils with Pisha sandstone geopolymer under impact loading using the Hopkinson lever impact test. The mechanical properties of cement-cured soils containing Pisha sandstone geopolymer were examined at various strain rates. The relationship between strain rate and strength of the geopolymer-cemented soil was established. As the strain rate increased, the coefficient of power increase for the Pisha sandstone geopolymer cement-cured soil initially rose before gradually stabilizing. The pore structure of the crushed specimens was analyzed using Mercury intrusion porosimetry. Based on the observed pore changes under impact loading, the pore intervals of the geopolymer-cemented soil were defined. A fitting model linking strain rate and porosity was developed. As strain rate increased, the porosity of the specimens first increased and then decreased, with larger internal pores gradually transforming into smaller ones. The highest porosity was observed at a strain rate of 64.67 s- 1. Crushing characteristics of the cement-cured soils under impact loading were determined through sieving statistics of the crushed particles. The average particle size of the fragments decreased as the strain rate increased. The fractal dimension initially decreased and then increased with the rise in strain rate, reaching its lowest value at a strain rate of 64.67 s- 1. Based on the dynamic mechanical properties, microscopic porosity, and fracture characteristics, the critical strain rate and damage form for cement-consolidated soils with Pisha sandstone geopolymer under impact loading were determined. This study offers valuable insights for the practical application of Pisha sandstone geopolymer cement-cured soils in engineering.

The shear behavior of gravel-block soil (GBS) is unique and significant for evaluation the failure mechanism of GBS landslide on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. This study focuses on interpreting the shear behavior observed in the GBS during large-scale direct shear tests conducted on a landslide in Jiacha County, Tibet, China. The tests considered coarse particle content (CPC), dry density, and moisture conditions. Additionally, a discrete element numerical model, scaled to match the laboratory testing dimensions, was developed to simulate the large-scale direct shear tests on GBS. Results indicated that an increase in CPC improves the strength of the GBS, as it enhances the framework strength through interlocking between gravel blocks and between gravel blocks and the soil mass. The critical CPC for shear failure of the GBS exhibits a decreasing trend as the dry density increases. Furthermore, particle crushing rate (PCR) of the GBS is positively correlated with CPC, vertical pressure, and dry density. The simulation results show good agreement with the test results, providing insights into the damage-shear fracture mechanism of typical GBS under large-scale direct shear tests. The research outcomes provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of geological hazards in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Particle crushing usually occurs in granular materials and affects their structural and mechanical properties. To investigate the mechanical behavior and crushing characteristics of heterogeneous particles, this study conducts both laboratory tests and numerical simulations for a macro-microscopic analysis of the heterogeneous particles. The laboratory tests results demonstrate that the single particle crushing strength and crushing pattern have obvious size effect. In numerical simulations, the heterogeneous crushable particle model was constructed by using Gaussian distribution and Voronoi tessellation, and the degree of heterogeneity (d) is defined as the ratio of the standard deviation to the expected value. The numerical findings demonstrate that the size effect of crushing strength is mainly attributed to heterogeneity. The degree of heterogeneity weakens the particle crushing strength. As the d value increases, the force-displacement curve of the particle exhibits stronger nonlinear characteristics, and the macroscopic failure pattern changes from brittle failure to ductile failure. Additionally, with the increase in d, the deformation coordination between child particles decreases, which leads to enhanced local stress concentration, causing a reduction in the crack initiation stress. This change causes the crack propagation mode to evolve from a sharp angle to a blunt angle, and ultimately determines the crushing strength and crushing pattern of particles.
