This paper presents a rigorous, semi-analytical solution for the drained cylindrical cavity expansion in transversely isotropic sand. The constitutive model used for the sand is the SANISAND-F model, which is developed within the anisotropic critical state theory framework that can account for the essential fabric anisotropy of soils. By introducing an auxiliary variable, the governing equations of the cylindrical expansion problem are transformed into a system of ten first-order ordinary differential equations. Three of these correspond to the stress components, three are associated with the kinematic hardening tensor, three describe the fabric tensor, and the last one represents the specific volume. The solution is validated through comparison with finite element analysis, using Toyoura sand as the reference material. Parametric analyses and discussion on the impact of initial void ratio, initial mean stress level, at-rest earth pressure coefficient and initial fabric anisotropy intensity are presented. The results demonstrate that the fabric anisotropy of sand significantly influences the distribution of stress components and void ratio around the cavity. When fabric anisotropy is considered, the solution predicts lower values of radial, circumferential and vertical stresses near the cavity wall compared to those obtained without considering fabric anisotropy. The proposed solution is expected to enhance the accuracy of cavity expansion predictions in sand, which will have significant practical applications, including interpreting pressuremeter tests, predicting effects of driven pile installation, and improving the understanding of sand mechanics under complex loading scenarios.
This study explores the effectiveness of soft viscoelastic biopolymer inclusions in mitigating cyclic liquefaction in loosely packed sands. This examination employs cyclic direct simple shear testing (CDSS) on loose sand treated with gelatin while varying the gelatin concentration and the cyclic stress ratio (CSR). The test results reveal that the inclusion of soft, viscoelastic gelatin significantly reduces shear strain and excess pore pressure during cyclic shear. Liquefaction potential, defined as the number of cycles to liquefaction (NL) at an excess pore pressure ratio (ru = Delta u/sigma ' vo) of 0.7, is substantially improved in gelatin-treated sands compared to gelatin-free sands. This improvement in liquefaction resistance is more pronounced as the inclusion stiffness increases. Furthermore, the viscoelastic pore-filling inclusion helps maintain skeletal stiffness during cyclic shearing, resulting in a higher shear modulus in gelatin-treated sand in both small and large-strain regimes. At a grain scale, pore-filling viscoelastic biopolymers provide structural support to the skeletal frame of a loosely packed sand. This pore filler mitigates volume contraction and helps maintain the effective stress of the soil structure, thereby reducing liquefaction potential under cyclic shearing. These findings underscore the potential of viscoelastic biopolymers as bio-grout agents to reduce liquefaction risk in loose sands.
Frequent road collapses caused by water leakages from pipelines pose a severe threat to urban safety and the wellbeing of city residents. Limited research has been conducted on the relationship between pipeline leakage and soil settlement, thus resulting in a lack of mathematical models that accurately describe the soil settlement process resulting from water erosion. In this study, we developed an equation for pipeline leakage, conducted physical model experiments on road collapses induced by drainage pipeline leakage, investigated the functional relationship between drainage pipeline leakage and soil settlement, and validated this relationship through physical experiments with pipelines of various sizes. The results indicated that drainage pipeline leakage triggered internal erosion and damaged the soil layers in four stages: soil particle detachment, seepage channel formation, void development, and road collapse. When the pipeline size was increased by a factor of 1.14, the total duration of road collapse induced by pipeline leakage increased by 20.78%, and the total leakage water volume increased by 33.5%. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the theoretical and actual settlement exceeded 0.9, thus demonstrating the reasonableness and effectiveness of the proposed settlement calculation method. The findings of this study serve as a basis for monitoring soil settlement and issuing early road collapse warnings.
A series of finite element analyses, conducted on the basis of modified triaxial tests incorporating radial drainage, were carried out to investigate the lateral deformation and stress state characteristics of prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) unit cells under vacuum preloading. The analyses revealed that the inward horizontal strain of the unit cell increases approximately linearly with the vacuum pressure (Pv) but decreases non-linearly with an increase in the initial vertical effective stress (sigma ' v0). The variations in the effective stress ratio, corresponding to the median excess pore water pressure during vacuum preloading of the PVD unit cell, were elucidated in relation to the Pv and sigma ' v0 using the simulation data. Relationships were established between the normalized horizontal strain and normalized effective stress ratio, as well as between the normalized stress ratio and a composite index parameter that quantitatively captures the effects of vacuum pressure, initial effective stress, and subsoil consolidation characteristics. These relationships facilitate the prediction of lateral deformation in PVD-improved grounds subjected to vacuum preloading, utilizing fundamental preloading conditions and soil properties. Finally, the proposed methodology was applied to analyze two field case histories, and its validity was confirmed by the close correspondence between the predicted and measured lateral deformation.
This study quantifies the seismic fragility assessment of shallow-founded buildings in liquefiable and treated soils, enhanced by drainage and densification, considering both short-and long-term behaviors. A conceptual framework is proposed for developing seismic fragility curves based on engineering demand parameters (EDPs) of buildings subjected to various earthquake magnitudes. The framework for establishing seismic fragility curves involves three essential steps. First, nonlinear dynamic analyses of soil-building systems are performed to assess both the short-term response, which occurs immediately following an earthquake, and the longterm response, when excess pore water pressure completely dissipates, and generate a dataset of building settlements. The seismic responses are compared in terms of excess pore water pressure buildup, immediate and residual ground deformation, and building settlement to explore the dynamic mechanisms of soil-building systems and evaluate the performance of enhanced drainage and densification over short-and long-term periods. Second, 38 commonly used and newly proposed intensity measures (IMs) of ground motions (GMs) are comprehensively evaluated using five statistical measures, such as correlation, efficiency, practicality, proficiency, and sufficiency, to identify optimal IMs of GMs. Third, fragility curves are developed to quantify probability of exceeding various capacity limit states, based on structural damage observed in Taiwan, for both liquefaction-induced immediate and residual settlements of buildings under different levels of IMs. Overall, this study proposes a rapid and straightforward probabilistic assessment approach for buildings in liquefiable soils, along with remedial countermeasures to enhance seismic resilience.
The mechanical behaviour of soil subject to shear loading or deformation is typically considered either completely drained or undrained. Under certain conditions, these drained and undrained scenarios can represent boundaries on the allowed volumetric strain. There is growing interest in exploring the response under intermediate conditions where partial drainage is allowed, particularly in the development of new approaches to mitigate the risk of liquefaction induced failure and the design of off-shore structures. This study uses the discrete element method (DEM) to investigate the effect of partial drainage conditions on the mechanical behaviour of spherical assemblies. Samples with different interparticle friction values are isotropically compressed and then subjected to undrained, drained, and partially drained triaxial shearing. The partially drained conditions are simulated in the DEM samples by applying a controlled volumetric strain that is a fraction of the drained volumetric strain. Results on loose samples indicate that allowing drainage enhances peak shear resistance and can also prevent liquefaction. Moreover, dense samples show a substantial increase in shear resistance when small changes in drainage and volumetric strain take place. The peak stress ratio and the stress ratio at the phase transformation point are insensitive to the drainage level. There is a linear correlation between the state parameter and the drainage level at the peak stress ratio and the phase transformation point. This observation could be used to trace partially drained stress-paths and could also aid the development of uncoupled constitutive models that account for drainage effects.
The leakage of drainage pipes is the primary cause of underground cavity formation, and the cavity diameter-to-depth ratio significantly affects the overall stability of roads. However, studies on the quantitative calculation for road comprehensive bearing capacity considering the cavity diameter-to-depth ratio have not been extensively explored. This study employed physical model tests to examine the influence of the cavity diameter-to-depth ratio on road collapse and soil erosion characteristics. Based on limit analysis theorems, a mechanical model between the road comprehensive bearing capacity and the cavity diameter-to-depth ratio (FB-L model) was established, and damage parameters of the pavement and soil layers were introduced to modify the FB-L model. The effectiveness of the FB-L model was validated by the data derived from eight physical model tests, with an average deviation of 14.0%. The results indicate a nonlinear increase in both the maximum diameter and fracture thickness of the collapse pit as the cavity diameter-to-depth ratio increased. The pavement and soil layers adjusted the diameter and fracture thickness of the collapse pit to maintain their load-bearing capacity when the cavity diameter-to-depth ratio changed. The fluid erosion range increased continuously with increasing depth of buried soil and was influenced predominantly by gravity and seepage duration. Conversely, the cavity diameter decreased as the buried depth increased, which is associated with the rheological repose angle of the soil. Furthermore, the damage parameters of the pavement and soil layers decrease as the distance from the collapse pit diminishes, with the pavement exhibiting more severe damage than the soil layer. This study provides a theoretical basis for preventing road collapses.
As a relatively new method, vacuum preloading combined with prefabricated horizontal drains (PHDs) has increasingly been used for the improvement of dredged soil. However, the consolidation process of soil during vacuum preloading, in particular the deformation process of soil around PHDs, has not been fully understood. In this study, particle image velocimetry technology was used to capture the displacement field of dredged soil during vacuum preloading for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Using the displacement data, strain paths in soil were established to enable a better understanding of the consolidation behavior of soil and the related pore water pressure changes. The effect of clogging on the deformation behavior and the growth of a clogging column around PHD were studied. Finite element analysis was also conducted to further evaluate the effects of the compression index (lambda) and permeability index (ck) on the soil deformation and clogging column. Empirical equations were proposed to characterize the clogging column and to estimate the consolidation time, serving as references for the analytical model that incorporates time-dependent variations in the clogging column for soil consolidation under vacuum preloading using PHDs.
Natural marine clays exhibit distinct dynamic behavior compared to remolded counterparts due to their inherent structural properties. Dynamic and static triaxial tests were conducted on both marine clay types to evaluate stress-strain behavior, double amplitude strains, pore water pressure, and dynamic elastic modulus, as well as post-cyclic strength attenuation. The results indicate that due to the structural properties, the effective stress path of undisturbed samples is more ductile than that of remolded samples. Also, there is a clear inflection point in the strain development curve of undisturbed samples. The structure exerts a certain degree of restraint on the strain development of the undisturbed samples, and has a distinct impact on the variation of pore water pressure at varying dynamic stress levels. Both marine clay types exhibited gradual reductions in dynamic elastic modulus and marked undrained strength attenuation. Critically, the attenuation of dynamic elastic modulus in undisturbed samples aligned with post-cyclic strength loss, while remolded samples exhibited greater dynamic elastic modulus loss relative to strength degradation. These findings clarify the role of soil structure in cyclic response and strength degradation, offering insights for the long-term stability assessment of structures and disaster mitigation in marine clay engineering.
In view of the challenges posed by construction on deep soft coastal ground, this study introduces the precast drainage pile (PDP) technology. This innovative approach combines precast pipe piles with prefabricated vertical drains, installed through static pile pressing and subsequently subjected to vacuum negative pressure for the consolidation of surrounding soil. To evaluate the efficacy of PDP technology, a comparative analysis was conducted between precast pile and PDP, incorporating field testing and numerical simulation. The investigation focused on the evolution of excess pore water pressure, deformation, and pile bearing capacity. Results indicated that vacuum negative pressure drainage could induce rapid initial dissipation of pore water pressure, followed by a slower rate. Excess pore pressure decreased more rapidly and significantly closer to the drained pile, aligning with drainage consolidation theory. After 5 days of consolidation, the PDP exhibited a 16% increase in ultimate bearing capacity compared with the undrained pile. Numerical simulation outcomes closely matched field measurements. The enhancement in pile bearing capacity was found to correlate hyperbolically with drainage time, culminating in a 26.5% ultimate increase. The research achievements facilitate the development of new pile technologies in coastal soft soil areas.
