The reasonable value of good gradation characteristic parameters is key in designing and optimising soil-rock mixed high fill embankment materials. Firstly, the DJSZ-150 dynamic-static large-scale triaxial testing instrument was used for triaxial compression shear tests on compacted skeleton structure soil-rock mixture standard specimens. The changes in strength and deformation indicators under different gradation parameters and confining pressure were analysed. Then, based on the Janbu empirical formula, relationships between parameters K, n, and (sigma 1-sigma 3)ult and the coefficient of uniformity Cu and coefficient of curvature Cc were explored. Empirical fitting formulas for Duncan-Chang model constants a and b were proposed, establishing an improved Duncan-Chang model for soil-rock mixtures considering gradation characteristics and stress states. Finally, based on significant differences in particle spatial distribution caused by gradation changes, three generalised models of matrix-block stone motion from different particle aggregation forms were proposed. Results indicate the standard specimen's strength and deformation indicators exhibit significant gradation effects and stress-state correlations. The improved Duncan-Chang model effectively simulates the stress-strain relationship curve under different gradations and confining pressure, with its characteristics explainable based on the matrix block stone motion generalised model.

To investigate the effect of interface temperature on the soil-reinforcement interaction mechanism, a series of pullout tests were conducted considering different types of reinforcement (geogrid and non-woven geotextile), backfill (dry sand, wet sand, and clay), and six interface temperatures. The test results indicate that at interface temperatures of 0 degrees C and above, reinforcement failure didn't occur during the pullout tests, whereas it predominantly occurred at subzero temperatures. Besides, the pullout resistance for the same soil-reinforcement interface gradually decreased as the interface temperature rose. At a given positive interface temperature, the pullout resistance between wet sand and reinforcement was significantly higher than that of the clayreinforcement interface but lower than that of the dry sand-reinforcement interface. Compared with geotextile reinforcements, geogrids were more difficult to pull out under the same interface temperature and backfill conditions. In addition, the lag effect in the transfer of tensile forces within the reinforcements was significantly influenced by the type of soil-reinforcement interface and the interface temperature. Finally, the progressive deformation mechanism along the reinforcement length at different interface temperatures was analyzed based on the strain distribution in the reinforcement.

In order to investigate the frost-heaving characteristics of wintering foundation pits in the seasonal frozen ground area, an outdoor in-situ test of wintering foundation pits was carried out to study the changing rules of horizontal frost heave forces, vertical frost heave forces, vertical displacement, and horizontal displacement of the tops of the supporting piles under the effect of groundwater and natural winterization. Based on the monitoring condition data of the in-situ test and the data, a coupled numerical model integrating hydrothermal and mechanical interactions of the foundation pit, considering the groundwater level and phase change, was established and verified by numerical simulation. The research results show that in the silty clay-sandy soil strata with water replenishment conditions and the all-silty clay strata without water replenishment conditions, the horizontal frost heave force presents a distribution feature of being larger in the middle and smaller on both sides in the early stage of overwintering. With the extension of freezing time, the horizontal frost heave force distribution of silty clay-sand strata gradually changes from the initial form to the Z shape, while the all-silty clay strata maintain the original distribution characteristics unchanged. Meanwhile, the peak point of the horizontal frost heave force in the all-silty clay stratum will gradually shift downward during the overwintering process. This phenomenon corresponds to the stage when the horizontal displacement of the pile top enters a stable and fluctuating phase. Based on the monitoring conditions of the in-situ test, a numerical model of the hydro-thermo-mechanical coupling in the overwintering foundation pit was established, considering the effects of the groundwater level and ice-water phase change. The accuracy and reliability of the model were verified by comparison with the monitoring data of the in-situ test using FLAC3D finite element analysis software. The evolution of the horizontal frost heaving force of the overwintering foundation pit and the change rule of its distribution pattern under different groundwater level conditions are revealed. This research can provide a reference for the prevention of frost heave damage and safety design of foundation pit engineering in seasonal frozen soil areas.

Hydraulic conductivity plays a significant role in the evolution of liquefaction phenomena induced by seismic loading, influencing the pore water pressure buildup and dissipation, as well as the associated settlement during and after liquefaction. Experimental evidence indicates that hydraulic conductivity varies significantly during and after seismic excitation. However, most previous studies have focused on experimentally capturing soil hydraulic conductivity variations during the post-shaking phase, primarily based on the results at the stage of excess pore water pressure dissipation and consolidation of sand particles after liquefaction. This paper aims to quantify the variation of hydraulic conductivity during liquefaction, covering both the co-seismic and postshaking phases. Adopting a fully coupled solid-fluid formulation (u-p), a new back-analysis methodology is introduced which allows the direct estimation of the hydraulic conductivity of a soil deposit during liquefaction based on centrifuge data or field measurements. Data from eight well-documented free-field dynamic centrifuge tests are then analysed, revealing key characteristics of the variation of hydraulic conductivity during liquefaction. The results show that hydraulic conductivity increases rapidly at the onset of seismic shaking but gradually decreases despite high pore pressures persisting. The depicted trends are explained using the KozenyCarman equation, which highlights the combined effects of seismic shaking-induced agitation, liquefaction, and solidification on soil hydraulic conductivity during the co-seismic and post-shaking phases.

This paper proposes a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) retrofitting scheme for improving the seismic performance of atrium-style metro stations (AMS). Past experimental studies have confirmed that the weakest of the AMS during strong earthquakes is located at the upper-story beam ends. However, there is thus far no candidate for a reference approach to retrofitting and strengthening the AMS. This study addresses this gap by applying CFRP retrofitting to both ends of the upper-story beam. The main objective is to assess the effectiveness of the proposed retrofitting scheme. First, a three-dimensional finite element model is developed to simulate dynamic soil-AMS interaction. The validity of the numerical method is assessed via a comparison with measured data from reduced-scale model tests. Second, a numerical model of the AMS retrofitted with CFRP is built using validated methods. Finally, dynamic time-history analyses of the AMS with and without CFRP retrofitting are conducted, and their dynamic responses, including inter-story drift, dynamic strain, and tensile damage, in conjunction with the lateral displacement of the surrounding ground, are compared. Comparison of the results for the non-retrofitted and retrofitted structures shows that CFRP retrofitting significantly reduces both the principal strains and tensile damage factors at the upper-story beam ends while slightly increasing those values at the mid-span of the beam; additionally, it does not change the structural lateral deformation. Therefore, it can be concluded that CFRP retrofitting could effectively improve the seismic performance of the AMS without changing its lateral stiffness.

Expansive soil, characterized by significant swelling-shrinkage behavior, is prone to cracking under wet-dry cycles, severely compromising engineering stability. This study combines experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation approaches to systematically investigate the improvement effects and micromechanisms of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on expansive soil. First, direct shear tests were conducted to analyze the effects of PVA content (0 %-4 %) and moisture content (30 %-50 %) on the shear strength, cohesive force, and internal friction angle of modified soil. Results show that PVA significantly enhances soil cohesive force, with optimal improvement achieved at 3 % PVA content. Second, wet-dry cycle experiments revealed that PVA effectively suppresses crack propagation by improving tensile strength and water retention. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations uncovered the distribution of PVA between montmorillonite (MMT) layers and its influence on interfacial friction behavior. The simulations demonstrated that PVA forms hydrogen bonding networks, enhancing interlayer interactions and frictional resistance. The improved mechanical performance of PVAmodified soil is attributed to both nanoscale bonding effects and macroscale structural reinforcement. This study provides theoretical insights and technical support for expansive soil stabilization.

The influence of seismic history on the liquefaction resistance of saturated sand is a complex process that remains incompletely understood. Large earthquakes often consist of foreshocks, mainshocks, and aftershocks with varying magnitudes and irregular time intervals. In this context, sandy soils undergo two interdependent processes: (i) partial excess pore water pressure (EPWP) generation during foreshocks or moderate mainshocks, where seismic loadings elevate EPWP without causing full liquefaction and (ii) incomplete EPWP dissipation between seismic events due to restricted drainage. These processes leave behind persistent residual EPWP, reducing the liquefaction resistance during subsequent shaking. A series of cyclic triaxial tests simulating these mechanisms revealed that liquefaction resistance increases when the EPWP ratio r(u) < 0.6-0.8 (peaking at r(u) similar to 0.4) but decreases sharply at higher r(u). Crucially, EPWP generation during seismic loading plays a dominant role in resistance evolution compared to reconsolidation effects. Threshold lines (TLs) mapping r(u), the reconsolidation ratio (RR), and peak resistance interval (the range of r(u) where the peak liquefaction resistance is located) indicates that resistance decreases above TLs and increases below them, with higher cyclic stress ratios (CSR) weakening these effects. These findings provide a unified framework for assessing liquefaction risks under realistic multi-stage seismic scenarios.

Open-ended pipe piles (OEPPs) are widely used in offshore foundations, yet accurately predicting their driving responses remains challenging due to soil plug complexities. Existing pile driving analysis models inadequately characterize the effects of soil plug, potentially leading to driving problems such as hammer refusal, pile running, and structural damage. This paper proposes an effective soil plug (ESP) model for OEPP driving analysis. The ESP model considers the effective range of soil plug, which exerts internal resistance that increases exponentially with depth while the beyond of effective range contributes only mass inertia. It also accounts for the relative slippage at the pile-soil plug interface. A differential iterative method is developed to solve the ESP model. Subsequently, investigations including the model validation and parameter analysis are conducted. Model validations against existing models and field measurements confirms the reliability of the ESP model. Parameters sensitivity analysis reveals the importance of soil plug length and distribution type of internal resistance on the pile dynamic responses. In addition, if soil plug slippage occurs, the displacement peak of soil plug increases with depth rather than one-dimensional wave attenuation. Furthermore, contrary to previous assumptions of continuous slippage, the soil plug experiences a discontinuous jump-sliding mode under long-duration impact loading. These findings provide theoretical basis for OEPP driving simulation and interpretations of high-strain dynamic test.

Fiber reinforcement has been demonstrated to mitigate soil liquefaction, making it a promising approach for enhancing the seismic resilience of tunnels in liquefiable strata. This study investigates the seismic response of a tunnel embedded in a liquefiable foundation locally improved with carbon fibers (CFs). Consolidated undrained (CU), consolidated drained (CD), and undrained cyclic triaxial (UCT) tests were conducted to determine the optimal CFs parameters, identifying a fiber length of 10 mm and a volume content of 1 % as the most effective. A series of shake table tests were performed to evaluate the effects of CFs reinforcement on excess pore water pressure (EPWP), acceleration, displacement, and deformation characteristics of both the tunnel and surrounding soil. The results indicate that CFs reinforcement significantly alters soil-tunnel interaction dynamics. It effectively mitigates liquefaction by enhancing soil stability and slowing EPWP accumulation. Ground heave is reduced by 10 %, while tunnel uplift deformation decreases by 61 %, demonstrating the stabilizing effect of CFs on soil deformation. The fibers network interconnects soil particles, improving overall structural integrity. However, the increased shear strength and stiffness due to CFs reinforcement amplify acceleration responses and intensify soil-structure interaction, leading to more pronounced tunnel deformation compared to the unimproved case. Nevertheless, the maximum tunnel deformation remains within 3 mm (0.5 % of the tunnel diameter), posing no significant structural risk from the perspective of the experimental model. These findings provide valuable insights into the application of fibers reinforcement for improving tunnel stability in liquefiable foundations.

Large-diameter monopiles of offshore wind turbines are subjected to continuous multistage cyclic loads of different types (one-way or two-way) and loading amplitudes over time. The loading history is likely to affect the lateral response during the subsequent loading stage. This paper conducts a systematic study on the lateral response of monopiles with and without reinforcement in multilayer soil. Two groups of monotonic centrifuge tests of monopiles with and without reinforcement are carried out to compare and study the influence of reinforcement on the displacement, bending moment and earth pressure of monopile foundations. Local reinforcement in the shallow layer effectively improved the bearing capacity of the monopile foundation. The ultimate bearing capacity of monopile foundations in monotonic tests provides a load basis for cyclic tests. Four groups of continuous multistage cyclic centrifuge tests of monopiles with and without reinforcement with different cyclic modes and loading amplitudesare carried out to investigate the influence of loading history on the lateral cumulative displacement, unloading secant stiffness and bending moment. Empirical design recommendations for monopiles under continuous multistage cyclic loads with different cyclic modes and loading amplitudes are provided based on the results of the tests.
