CoCr strengthened coating was deposited on the M2Al surface by electro-spark process, which was protected under high pure argon in the deposition region. The mechanical properties of strengthened coating were evaluated by the bond strength between the parent metal and coating and micro-hardness of the coating and thereby. Dry sliding test was performed on the coating to investigate its wear behaviors. The microstructure of the bond layer and thereby was observed and analyzed using scan electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results reveal that the bond strength of 485.8 MPa is achieved between parent metal and the coating. The new phases of Fe Cr, FeNi and NiCrCoMo, which are considered to result in the metallurgical bond between the parent metal and the coating, were detected in the bond layer. Micro-hardness values gradually decreases from the coating to parent metal, in which micro-hardness of the coating is about 500 HV, one of the parent metal is about 300 HV, and one of the bond layer is medium between that of the coating and parent metal. The superficial property of the M2Al steel can be made better by electro-spark process, therefore, it is feasible to deposit CoCr strengthened coating on the surface of M2Al, which can be applied to improve wearable performance or precision repair small defect of steel surface.
