Chemical degradation of grease in ball bearings is caused by oxidation, which occurs as antioxidants are depleted. The point at which this happens is called the induction time. In this study, we examined the oxidation induction time of several high-quality commercial greases using thermogravimetric analysis with an isoconversional Friedman method. By deriving kinetic parameters at critical conversion points, we demonstrated that these parameters could predict the impact of temperature on grease life under very low load conditions. Our modeling approach successfully replicated the characteristic Arrhenius behavior observed in grease life tests Our modeling approach successfully replicated the characteristic Arrhenius behavior observed in grease life tests supporting its utility as a predictive tool for grease life and the optimization of grease formulation.
