In this paper, pure NiCr coatings and 1 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt% and 15 wt% TiB 2 composite NiCr coatings were fabricated using the atmospheric plasma spraying process. Compared with pure NiCr coating, the addition of TiB 2 hard phase makes the composite coating exhibit higher hardness and better wear resistance. The analysis of the wear scar morphology and wear debris indicates that a solid lubricating film composed of NiO, Cr 2O 3, B 2O 3, and other oxides is formed during the friction process. These lubricating films effectively reduce the friction coefficient and wear rate between the grinding ball surface and the nickel‑chromium alloy material by reducing the direct contact between the grinding ball surface and the nickel‑chromium alloy material, thereby this mechanism prolongs the service life of the coating. The results of friction experiments show that the NiCr-10 wt% TiB 2 coating has the best performance.
