The 2013 EU-US Frontiers of Engineering was held November 21-23, 2013, at Hotel Dolce Chantilly in Chantilly, France. About 60 outstanding engineers under the age of 45 met for an intensive 2-1/2 day symposium to discuss cutting-edge developments in four areas: Nanosensors, Big Data, the Future of Transportation, and Wireless Broadband. The event facilitated international and cross-disciplinary research collaboration, promoted the transfer of new techniques and approaches across disparate engineering fields, and encouraged the creation of a transatlantic network of world-class engineers. This symposium was hosted in partnership with the European Council of Academies of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering and the National Academy of Technologies of France. The 2013 German-American Frontiers of Engineering symposium was held April 26-28, 2013, in Irvine, California. GAFOE aimed to bring together outstanding, early-career German and American engineers from industry, universities, and other research institutions to introduce their areas of engineering research and technical work, thereby facilitating an interdisciplinary transfer of knowledge and methodology that could eventually lead to collaborative networks of engineers from the two countries. The 2013 US Frontiers of Engineering was hosted by DuPont on September 19-21, at the Hotel DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware. About 100 outstanding engineers under the age of 45 met for an intensive 2-1/2 day symposium to discuss cutting-edge developments in four areas: Designing and Analyzing Social Networks, Cognitive Manufacturing, Energy: Reducing our Dependence on Fossil Fuels, and Flexible Electronics. The goal of the Frontiers of Engineering program is to bring together engineers from all engineering disciplines and from industry, universities, and federal labs to facilitate cross-disciplinary exchange and promote the transfer of new techniques and approaches across fields in order to sustain and build U.S. innovative capacity.
