A friction stir welding machine (1) adapted to perform solid phase welding on a welding portion of materials (2a, 2b) welded, by pressing a welding tool (4) against the welding portion of the materials to be welded while rotating the welding tool, and forcing the welding tool to be advanced into softened portion which is softened by a frictional heat while stirring the softened portion, the friction stir welding machine comprising a welding tool (4), a stirring vod (17) and a rotating driving source (14), wherein the welding tool (4) is detachably provided to a lower end of the stirring rod (17) which is configured to be rotated by a rotational force transmitted from the rotation driving source (14), wherein the friction stir welding machine (1) further comprises a fixing member (45) adapted to be detachably mounted on the stirring rod (17) for holding the welding tool (4) in the stirring rod (17); and characterised in that: the welding tool (4) comprises a mounting portion (46) which has a polygonal or elliptical cross-sectional shape perpendicular to the axis of the welding tool (4) such that the distance from the axis to the outer periphery of the mounting portion (46) changes along the circumferential direction; the stirring rod (17) comprises a correspondingly shaped fitting recess (43) in which the mounting portion (46) is fitted; and a coating made of aluminum nitride is formed on at least a region of the welding tool (4) to be in contact with the materials (2a, 2b) to be welded.2. The friction stir welding machine according to claim 1, further comprising an inert gas supply means (6) for supplying an inert gas toward the welding portion into which the welding tool (4) is advanced.3. The friction stir welding machine according to claim 1, wherein the coating is formed by any one of chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition and thermal spraying.
