Hierarchical porous TPU@CNT sponge for high-performance triboelectric nanogenerators via dual contact electrification and self-powered sensing applications

The development of sustainable and scalable methods for high-performance, durable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is essential for efficient energy harvesting from human motion. Porous polymer materials play a pivotal role in optimizing TENG performance by exploiting both surface and bulk triboelectric charges. Herein, a simple and efficient sacrificial template method is used to fabricate a carbon nanotube (CNT)-modified thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU@CNT) sponge. This novel sponge is highly compressible (80 %) and exhibits excellent structural stability, electrical conductivity, and piezoresistive properties, making it ideal for use as both electrodes and triboelectric layers. The fabricated TENG device utilizes a dual contact electrification effect, significantly improving its triboelectric performance, resulting in an open-circuit voltage of 252 V, a short-circuit current of 38 μA, and an output power density of 1.642 W/m 2 at a 100 MΩ load. These performance characteristics allow the TENG to effectively power LEDs, charge capacitors, and drive small electronic devices. Moreover, the TENG functions as a self-powered sensor, demonstrating potential for applications in health monitoring and smart transportation systems. This work provides an efficient and scalable method for fabricating porous triboelectric composites, offering valuable insights for the design of integrated self-powered sensors and smart systems.
