A lubricating composition comprising: an oil of lubricating viscosity; a Cio to Ci4 alkenyl carboxylic acid ester of an aliphatic diol or polyol, where the double bond of the alkenyl group is within or directly attached to the longest continuous chain of the alkenyl group.2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the alkenyl group of the alkenyl carboxylic acid is linear or branched.3. The composition of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the alkenyl carboxylic acid ester comprises a mono-ester or a plurality of ester groups of the aliphatic diol or polyol.4. The composition of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the alkenyl carboxylic acid ester comprises a mono-ester of the aliphatic diol or polyol.5. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the aliphatic diol or polyol of the alkenyl carboxylic acid ester has at least two free hydroxyl groups.6. The composition of any preceding claim, wherein the alkenyl carboxylic acid ester of an aliphatic diol or polyol is represented by the formula:wherein n = 1 to 5R1, R2and R3are each independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms; such that R1, R2, and R3taken together are from 6 to 12 carbon atoms; andR4is a linear or branched aliphatic hydrocarbyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms; and p is an integer from 1 to 4.36RECTIFIED SHEET (RULE 91 )7. The composition of claim 6, wherein R4is a linear or branched aliphatic hydrocarbyl of 3 to 5 carbon atoms and p is 2.8. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the alkenyl carboxylic acid ester of an aliphatic diol or polyol is represented by the formula:wherein n = 1 to 5;R1, R2and R3are each independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms; such that R1, R2, and R3taken together provide at least 6 carbon atoms and more than 10 carbon atoms to the composition; andR5and R6are independently hydrogen or CH2OH where at least one of R5and R6is CH2OH9. The composition of any one of claims 6 to 8, wherein n is 2;R1is a Ce to Cio hydrocarbyl; andR2and R3are each hydrogen.10. The composition of any one of claims 6 to 8, wherein n is 2;R1is H; andR2and R3are each independently hydrogen or a Cr, to Cio hydrocarbyl, provided that at least one of R2 or R3 is hydrogen and the other is a Ce to Cio hydrocarbyl.RECTIFIED SHEET (RULE 91 )11. The composition of any preceding claim, wneieui the alkenyl carboxylic acid ester of a polyol comprises a mono-ester of glycerol.12. The composition of any one of claims 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11, wherein the alkenyl carboxylic acid ester of an aliphatic diol or polyol is represented by the formula:, (IV)14. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the alkenyl carboxylic acid ester of a diol or polyol is present in the lubricating composition in an amount 0.05 to 3 wt % of the composition.15. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the alkenyl carboxylic acid ester of a diol or polyol is present in the lubricating composition in an amount of 0.05 to 1.0, or 0.7 to 0.75, or 0.1 to 0.3, or about 0.15 wt % of the composition.16. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, further comprising lubricant additives selected from polyisobutenyl succinimide dispersants, overbased and neutral detergents, antioxidants, anti-wear agents, friction modifiers, corrosion inhibitors, polymeric viscosity modifiers, foam inhibitors and combinations thereof.RECTIFIED SHEET (RULE 91 )17. The composition of claim 16, wherein the poiyisouutenyl succinimide dispersant is present in the lubrication composition in an amount of from 0.5 to 4.0, or 0.8 to 3.0, or 1.1 to 2.3, or 1.5 to 2.8 weight percent of the composition.18. The composition of any one of claims 16 and 17, wherein the overbased and neutral detergent is an alkaline earth metal detergent.19. The composition of claim 18 wherein, the alkaline earth metal detergent is present in the lubricating composition in an amount of from 0.2 wt % to 15 wt %, or 0.3 wt % to 10 wt %, or 0.3 wt % to 8 wt %, or 0.4 wt % to 3 wt % of the composition.20. The composition of any one of claims 16 to 19, wherein the antiwear agent is present in an amount of from 0.05 wt % to 3 wt %, or 0.08 to 1.3, or 0.08 to 2.1 wt %, or 0.1 wt % to 1.5 wt %, or 0.5 wt % to 0.9 wt % of the composition.21. The composition of claim 20, wherein the antiwear agent is a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate.22. The composition of any one of claims 16 to 21, wherein the antioxidant is present in an amount of from 0.01 wt % to 5 wt %, or 0.1 wt % to 4 wt %, or 0.2 wt % to 3 wt %, or 0.5 wt % to 2 wt % of the composition.23. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composition comprises: an oil of lubricating viscosity; a carboxylic acid ester of an aliphatic diol or polyol selected from Formula III and Formula IV:RECTIFIED SHEET (RULE 91 )0.5 to 3.0 wt % of a polyisobutenyl succiminiue uispersant;0.2 to 3.0 wt % of an overbased or neutral alkaline earth metal detergent;0.08 to 2.1 wt % of a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate; and0.1 to 2.0 wt % of an antioxidant.24. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein a Cio to C14 alkenyl carboxylic acid ester of an aliphatic diol or polyol is decomposition product of a protected ketal precursor compound.25. The composition of claim 24, wherein the protected ketal precursor compound has the general formula:where:R2, R3and R4are each independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, where R2, R3and R4taken together have from 6 to 10 carbon atoms.26. The composition of claim 24, wherein the protected ketal precursor compound has the general formula:where,40RECTIFIED SHEET (RULE 91 )R1 is a hydrocarbyl group of 1 to iu caiuon atoms; andR2, R3, and R4are each independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, where R1, R2, and R3taken together have from 6 to 10 carbon atoms.27. A method of operating an internal combustion engine comprising supplying to the engine a composition of any one of the preceding claims.28. Use of the composition of any one of claims 1 to 24 to perform one or more in an internal combustion engine: reduce friction, improve fuel economy, and reduce wear.29. A lubricant composition comprising: an oil of lubricating viscosity; and a compound of formula:where:R2, R3and R4are each independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, where R2, R3and R4taken together have from 6 to 10 carbon atoms.30.
